The trailer for Pokémon Unite has received an unprecedented number of dislikes on YouTube, with the fans united in showing their displeasure toward the upcoming Pokémon MOBA. The problems started last week, with a Pokémon Presents video that featured trailers for a number of games.

The first Pokémon Presents revealed New Pokémon Snap, which is one of the most highly-requested Pokémon games of the past twenty years. Pokémon Presents ended with The Pokémon Company president CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara promoting another event the following week and promising it would feature an announcement for another major project. This statement sent the fans imaginations running wild, and the array of Generation II plushies behind Ishihara led to speculation that new Pokémon: Let’s Go games set in Johto would be revealed.

The recent Pokémon Presents event turned out to be a reveal for Pokémon Unite, which is an upcoming MOBA title developed with Chinese mobile giant Tencent. Pokémon Unite will likely be a huge game, but it was also likely marketed the wrong way. The kind of fans who wake up early to watch a Pokémon Presents video are not the kind of people who are going to be excited for casual game on mobiles. As such, the like/dislike ratio for the Pokémon Unite trailer on The Official Pokémon YouTube Channel is currently sitting at 78K likes and 132K dislikes.

It seems that YouTube might have scrubbed some of the dislikes from the video. Screen Rant reported yesterday in our coverage about the disappointing reaction to Pokémon Unite that the dislike numbers sat at 157K. This means either twenty-five thousand people changed their opinion overnight, or something fishy is going on.

Pokémon Unite will likely be an extremely popular game and the reaction to the trailer is due to the manner in which it was promoted. If it had been included in the last Pokémon Presents video and revealed alongside New Pokémon Snap and the release of the Isle of Armor, then it wouldn’t have garnered a negative response. The fact that The Pokémon Company hyped the hardcore fans up with a new reveal, only for it to be a mobile game aimed at the most casual of audiences shows a tone-deaf response to the fanbase. The Pokémon Company might think Pokémon Unite is a huge deal, but the people who woke up early expecting to see Pokémon Let’s Go Marill & Let’s Go Snubbull or remakes of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl were only going to be left disappointed by a Pokémon MOBA, and the dislikes on the YouTube video are proof of this.
