Star of the very first Pokémon movie, the hyper-intelligent Mewtwo has become one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters. Most fans know the gist of Mewtwo’s Team Rocket-connected backstory in the movies and anime, but the Psychic-type’s origins and creator differ in the Pokémon Red and Blue games.
Mewtwo’s anime origins vary, depending on the which release of Pokémon: The First Movie is considered. In The Uncut Story of Mewtwo’s Origin, a bonus short included with certain home-video releases, viewers are introduced to a scientist named Dr. Fuji, who had gained cloning experience while attempting to bring his deceased daughter, Amber, back to life. Team Rocket leader Giovanni heard of Dr. Fuji’s cloning expertise and hired him to create a powerful, genetically altered clone of the ancient Pokémon Mew. Dr. Fuji accepted, using the Giovanni-funded Mewtwo experiment to gain knowledge for his personal goal. At one point while Mewtwo was still developing, it psychically communicated with the growing Amber clone before she suddenly passed away, leading to a deeply instilled anger and existential confusion in Mewtwo.
This origin isn’t undisputed, however. The Amber-related elements of the story were not included in the Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution remake, so it seems the Pokémon anime universe no longer considers it canon. Mewtwo’s in-game background offers yet another, alternate story. It’s similarly dark, but a few murky details make the tale of its creation – and its scientist creator – distinct from either anime telling. Here’s how Mewtwo came to be in Pokémon Red and Blue.
The Man Who Created Mewtwo In Pokémon Red & Blue
In Pokémon Red and Blue’s Lavender Town, the Cinnabar Island Lab is said to be founded by a man with a familiar name – Dr. Fuji. Nearby, in Cinnabar’s Pokémon Mansion, scraps of a journal tell the games’ version of Mewtwo’s creation. It’s similar to the anime’s, with Mew being discovered in a jungle and cloned to create Mewtwo, but it’s entirely detached from Team Rocket. Later games delivered more context: In Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee!, Cinnabar Gym Leader Blaine says these Pokémon Mansion research notes were written by an unnamed old friend of his. Then, in the Pokémon Masters mobile game, Blaine says he used to work with a “Professor Fuji.”
All of this seems to create a clear picture of Mewtwo’s creator, but no NPC named Dr. Fuji ever appeared in Red and Blue. That doesn’t mean he was gone, though. Prior to reaching Cinnabar, the player rescues a man named Mr. Fuji from Team Rocket in Lavender Town’s Pokémon Tower. Mr. Fuji cares for orphaned Pokémon in Lavender Town and had come to comfort the spirit of a Marowak killed by the evil group. Despite the obvious naming similarities, it was never explicitly stated that Dr. Fuji and Mr. Fuji were the same person until 2013.
The anime miniseries Pokémon Origins retold the story of the original Pokémon games in four episodes, following protagonist Red’s journey through Kanto. In the fourth episode, Red’s rival, Blue, returns from Cerulean Cave with stories of a mysterious new Psychic-type, and Red and Professor Oak are able to connect this Pokémon to Mr. Fuji. Oak says Fuji attempted to create a powerful Pokémon in the past, back when he was known as Dr. Fuji. Scenes then show Mr. Fuji worrying for Red’s safety as he attempts to catch “that monster,” Mewtwo, confirming Red and Blue’s kindly old Mr. Fuji created the games’ most powerful Pokémon.
