24 years after Pokémon fans were first introduced to Trainer Red via Pokémon Red and Blue, the character revealed that he actually can talk after all.

Last week marked the 24th anniversary of the day the world was introduced to Pokémon for the first time. Red and Blue were released on February 27, 1996, and every year fans celebrate that in a variety of ways. This year they had more opportunities than ever to do so, as events were held across Pokémon GO, Sword and Shield, Masters, and even the online Pokémon Center.

Speaking of Masters, the unique Pokémon game celebrated Pokémon Day in a couple of different ways. It introduced a Battle Villa in which players can put their nine best sync pairs to the test. It also added the franchise’s oldest sync pair to the mix. Trainer Red, the protagonist of Pokémon Red and Blue, accompanied by a trusty Charizard.

Trainer Red was the cap-wearing character budding trainers first took control of in 1996. Other than his longevity, Red is most well known for being a man of few words. In fact, he is a man of no words. Red says nothing in Red and Blue and has failed to speak in follow up appearances in various titles such as Gold and Silver or Sun and Moon.

This is why it knocked us and a bunch of other Masters players around the world for six when, after all this time, he uttered his very first words in what is now a very special Pokémon Day. Elite Four member Flint jokes about Red’s lack of response, as so many others have done over the years, and is shocked as we were when Red talks back. The OG trainer says “words are unnecessary” when it comes to training his Charizard.

As for when we will hear Red speak again, trainers might have to wait another 24 years. Maybe he will say a few words every Pokémon Day, or perhaps he will never speak again. His lack of input has become a running joke over the past two decades, a joke that has now come to an end. Honestly, we’re not sure whether we’re happy to have finally heard him speak, or sad that one of Pokémon’s longest-running traditions has officially come to an end.
