Disney and Pokémon – two generation-defining brands!

If pushed to pick one or the other, which would it be? While this dilemma is particularly relevant for people who grew up during the decade of Mentos commercials and Nirvana, Nintendo’s reach far exceeds a single demographic. Even if the anime failed to leave a lasting or positive impression, the RPG franchise regularly attracts a massive audience.

When it comes to Walt Disney, the studio barely needs an introduction. In the winter of 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs arrived in theatres and initiated Disney’s princess project. As the protagonist of the 16th highest grossing “G” rated film of all time, Snow White set quite an intimidating standard, one that Mickey Mouse has regularly transcended. Regardless of someone’s age, they likely grew up watching Cinderella, The Lion King, Aladdin, or Sleeping Beauty. Disney Princesses are more than just fictional characters: they are royalty!

Returning to the original question, what if we said there was a third option? One capable of combining Disney’s timeless stars with Pokémon’s anime whimsy? Today, we are breaking right through the barrier separating these two juggernauts!

Here are 25 Disney kids characters reimagined as Pokémon trainers!

25 The Birth Of A Legend

As Disney’s ultimate money maker, Frozen’s hype far exceeded its medium. With multiple toy lines and amateur renditions of Let It Go, Elsa and Anna are inescapable! In the case of the former, the Snow Queen etched her name into animation legend. While the story barely shares a passing resemblance to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen — clearly, Frozen did something right. Following the film’s release, hundreds of fanart started to circulate the web. Elsa crossed over with nearly every popular literary entity, including Nintendo’s RPG franchise. Kirej7 paints the Snow Queen at the height of her glory. Surrounded by some of the most powerful and iconic ice Pokémon, Elsa has never seemed so majestic. This might be the only time that the trainer’s power overshadows that of her team.

24 Moana Unlocks Surf

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Moana is just humoring Lapras. As the ocean’s chosen one, she can more than handle herself while traversing the endless blue. She was BORN with the “surf” ability unlocked. Disney’s recent film garnered a substantial amount of positive press for the way it handled Polynesian culture. Predating Moana by nearly 20 years, Pocahontas and Mulan tried to accomplish the same thing…

…with less than stellar results.

Ciapura imagines Disney’s princess at a time in her life when she is in complete control. This interpretation of Moana is not questioning her place in the world, as she knows exactly where she belongs – riding on Lapras’ back. It is a gorgeous picture, but there is a single small but worrying point! As a fire-type, Torchic should be kept miles away from water. One unexpected wave and the chicken is singing Under the Sea.

23 Under The Sea (With A Pokémon)

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

1Abiodun’s chosen Pokémon is the perfect candidate to accompany Ariel on her adventure through the sea. Introduced during Generation VII, Brionne loves to dance and can pick up moves from other sea creatures or humans. She might not be able to sing her own songs, but Brionne could make for a decent background dancer. The Little Mermaid was a monumental release for Disney, as Ariel’s journey brought the studio’s princess brand back to the forefront. The Black Cauldron tried to do the same, but Princess Eilonwy lacked the staying power of Aurora or Cinderella. Ariel returned Disney’s animated films to their former glory, before Beauty and the Beast sealed the deal. Accompanied by Brionne, Ariel has never looked happier. As an added advantage, the PokéPrincess can make due without a Lapras.

22 Stepping Out Of Elsa’s Shadow (With The Help Of A Venusaur)

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Anna is slightly unlucky. She is a perfectly serviceable Disney princess, one that is more than willing to risk her life to protect those important to her, but she exists in the same universe as the Snow Queen. From her icy powers to that stylish gown, Elsa cannot be overshadowed. As the younger sibling, Anna is destined to always be described as “Elsa’s sister.”

Certain mountains are too steep to climb.

Well, thanks to IsaiahStephens’ artistic fingers, Anna can finally break through to the other side. She actually has a balanced team, something that is not particularly common in PokéPrincess crossovers, turning Frozen’s second-in-command into one of the hardest (pretend) Gym Leaders. Venusaur is tough enough on its own.

21 Revisiting The Greats (Now, With Added Pokémon!)

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Brunotsu brings together three of Disney’s idolized animated characters to present them with a backdrop of colorful lights and whimsical majesty. Oh, right, there are also a couple of Pokémon. Dressed in her iconic red gown and crown, Sleeping Beauty’s Aurora takes center stage and completely owns the picture. To her left, we find Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ iconic princess holding Taillow, a bird Pokémon from Generation III. Last but definitely not least, Cinderella enjoys a bit of quality time with her Nidoran. Brunotsu’s portfolio features quite a few of these group photos, with nearly every princess making an appearance. As it should be readily apparent, the author is a huge fan of Pokémon, so fans of the anime or games should consider checking it out.

20 Rapunzel Meets Her Match

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Tangled’s Rapunzel spent her childhood yearning for adventure. She wanted nothing more than to break free of Mother Gothel’s influence. The wait lasted for many years but finally happened with the arrival of Flynn Rider and his horse Maximus, who use Rapunzel’s blonde locks to escape her tower. As Paigepig13’s princess has yet to receive a haircut, we have to assume this drawing takes place prior to the events of Tangled.

Continuity is ALWAYS crucial…

Partnered with a quirky selection of leaf Pokémon, Rapunzel’s future is starting to brighten up. Besides sharing a similar name to Disney’s animated film, Tangela is the only thing that could possibly relate to the teenager’s hair issues. The rest of the Pokémon just seem happy to be part of Rapunzel’s team.

19 Snow White And The Six Pokémon

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

As the teenager who started it all, Snow White holds a special place in Disney’s catalog of princesses. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set the pace and, surprisingly, has stood the test of time. Released in 1937, Walt Disney’s first feature-length animated flick is slowly approaching its hundred-year anniversary. Nintendo’s franchise has a long way to go before it can claim the same; although, in recent months, the anime broke the 1000 episode barrier.

One Piece – eat your heart out!

While the milestones are worlds apart, Disney and Pokémon have accomplished a lot in their own way. VibaFleischer’s tribute equally honors Snow White and OLM’s anime, as the PokéPrincess enjoys a moment in the sun with her team. This time around, she can make due without Prince Charming or the seven dwarfs.

18 Moana’s PokéParadise

Kirej7 is extremely talented at recreating the anime style. The author’s portfolio is worth a visit for fans of My Hero Academia or for anyone who loves to see Western characters presented with a fresh coat of paint. When discussing flawless character designs, Disney is no slouch. Putting aside the studio’s recent shift to 3D computer-animation, Mickey Mouse’s older cartoons have aged gracefully. Despite being almost as old as The Simpsons’ Mr. Burns, Sleeping Beauty and Bambi could effortlessly pass for modern films. Disney knows how to circumvent the passage of time. Moana’s animation might not have the same feel as classic Disney, but it is still fantastic. Kirej7’s marriage of anime and Disney suggests that the studio should consider spicing up its aesthetic.

17 Pixel Magic

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

In the realm of fanart, pixel art is a unique subgenre. Combining a SNES style aesthetic with a retro soundtrack, it is near impossible to not be overcome by a sense of nostalgia. In some ways, pixel art is dated and timeless. Whenever an artist or developer brandishes their drawing or game with this peculiar aesthetic, inadvertently, their creation will feel like a product of a bygone time. On the flip side, pixel art continues to be popular today and there are many uses for it.

Pixel art is dated but not obsolete.

Bbrunomoraes’ vibrant celebration of Disney and Pokémon offers four gifts for the price of one. Alice in Wonderland, Hercules, Lilo & Stitch, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame have all sent representatives to Johto for the Pokémon League.

16 The Crowning Of A Champion

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Based on the legend of Hua Mulan, Disney took another go at tackling a foreign culture with 1998’s Mulan. Starring Eddie Murphy and Ming-Na Wen, Hercules’ successor was an improvement over Pocahontas and indicated that Disney’s dip in quality was only temporary. For those who have not watched this ’90s classic, Mulan recounts the eponymous character’s heroic acts during China’s war with the Hans. Bolstered by gorgeous visuals and a humorous Eddie Murphy, Mulan deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the studio’s absolute best. In 1998, Disney went out of its comfort zone to try something new, and VibaFleischer did the same by joining Mulan with Pokémon. Assisted by a couple of capable animals, the Han Dynasty does not stand a chance.

15 Melting Elsa’s Frozen Heart With A Bolt Of Lightning

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

If there are two Pokémon capable of mending the strained relationship between Frozen’s Elsa and Anna, at least prior to the reunion at the end of Disney’s story, Plusle and Minun would be it. Aesthetically similar to a Pichu, these two adorable creatures arrived on the scene during Generation III and mostly served as comedic relief. Adorable to a fault; Plusle and Minun value friendship, as they often try their hardest to support their teammates. Elsa and Anna could learn a thing from these two, although a talking snowman is the next best thing.

As long as Olaf does not take time away from Pixar…

Phantomania’s awesome drawing is sweet and captures the aesthetic of both series. In terms of animation, Frozen and Pokémon are not that far apart, but this is quite a seamless union.

14 Alice In Pokéland

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Alice in Wonderland was Disney’s 13th animated feature. Based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, Walt Disney Productions successfully captured the nonsensical spirit of the source material. In contrast with the studio’s filmography, the 1951 classic bestows a one-of-a-kind experience on viewers. Mickey Mouse rarely strays away from a formulaic good versus evil narrative. Rather than constantly seeking to push the story forward, Alice in Wonderland sways back and forth between whimsy and nightmarish imagery. Prior to Tim Burton’s abomination, Alice was far from a typical Disney girl. Her dry perspective complimented the cartoon’s dreamy ambiance. Pavlover made full use of Pokémon’s catalog, which currently clocks in at 807, to find six candidates who reflect Alice’s original trip to Wonderland. The Red Queen’s reign might be at an end.

13 Getting Comfortable With Nature’s Wildlife

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Technically, these three are Disney’s youngest princesses. Elsa and Moana do not qualify, as the former graduated to a higher position and the latter’s role as a Chief sounds more important. Brunotsu has featured before on this list, but we could not pass another opportunity to show off the author’s PokéPrincesses!

A lizard, a bear, and a reindeer walk into a PokéCenter…

OLM and Nintendo have to mark every generation by introducing a bunch of new Pokémon. Eventually, they are going to run out of ideas and Brunotsu’s entry serves as a prime example. Rapunzel, Brave’s Merida, and Anna are joined by a lizard, a bear, and a reindeer. Kecleon is the only one that shows a hint of creativity, but all three of them are just the franchise’s equivalent of an animal.

12 The Hero Of The Future

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Fun fact, but Tron: Legacy was produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The futuristic action film underperformed at the box office and failed to impress critics, but Joseph Kosinski’s feature was a decent sequel to the 1982 original. Disney followed this disappointment with an animated series called Tron: Uprising, which garnered a better reception than its cinematic predecessor. Sadly, Disney canceled the series due to poor ratings. As a franchise, Tron might be lost in limbo, but its legacy has yet to be forgotten. Mock posters are one way for Tron: Uprising fans to show appreciation to the short-lived cartoon. Featuring a cameo by Umbreon, finni’s stunning creation could be exactly what the doctor ordered for the franchise! Okay, a single piece of fanart is not going to save Tron, but it is pretty cool.

11 Mahogany Town’s Ice Gym Leader

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Technically, Elsa would be a PokéQueen rather than a PokéPrincess. Alternatively, in this universe, Frozen’s antihero might have left home prior to her parents receiving the Disney treatment. If that is the case, Elsa would be eligible for the prestige made-up title of PokéPrincess. At one point in the film, the Snow Queen uses her powers to create an anthropomorphic snowman voiced by Josh Gad.

A villain rivaling Scar and Ursula…

With abilities rivaling a deity at her disposal, does Elsa really need any Pokémon? Surely, the soon-to-be Queen can just win battles on her own! On those rare occasions when Elsa needs a breather, Weavile and Glaceon can step in to carry some of the slack. It would still be a downgrade from Elsa’s powers, but just look at home happy they are in lalindaaa’s drawing!

10 Who Needs A Demigod When You Have A Tauros?

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Tauros does not appear to be particularly amused by its current predicament. Can you really blame the powerful Pokémon? It is being used to give piggy-back rides to teenagers and children! Even fictional video game bulls have pride! Moana firmly established that the future Chief of Matanui has a way with the ocean. She is one with the water. When it comes to the wildlife, there is little to imply that Moana is particularly beloved. They probably consider her to be okay, but we doubt they would pick Moana over Snow White. Pavlover’s art style elevates this crossover to new heights, especially when it comes to the human characters. Granted, Moana barely resembles her source material, but the author found a reasonable middle point that compliments both parties.

9 Eevee Has Every Princess Covered

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

With a legacy exceeding two decades, Pokémon has established a vast array of cool fictional monsters to catch. Depending on the gamer’s preferred generation, there exist a handful of Pokémon who should always be included in someone’s team. Eevee is not only the cutest fictional animal to ever be designed, but it can evolve into eight different Pokémon! Without question, Eevee is the greatest of all time.

Mewtwo is a close second.

Samanthaeufkes combined Disney’s leading ladies with four of Pokémon’s stylish pets. Snow White, Rapunzel, Elsa, and Aurora are partnered with Sylveon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Flareon respectively. Putting aside Frozen’s obvious team, the others could have gone in a different direction. Anyway, this is an awesome drawing worthy of Disney and Pokémon’s names.

8 A Trip To Atlantis Would Be Much Simpler With A Manaphy

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Atlantis: The Lost Empire accomplished a feat that only a handful of Disney releases have been able to do: it disappointed! We are not referring to the film’s critical reception, which was mediocre but hardly a first for the Mouse, but Atlantis: The Lost Empire failed to bring in the big bucks. While a couple of the company’s latter live-action films would follow suit and 2002’s Treasure Planet performed even worse, Milo and Kida’s trip to the lost city was a clear sign that Disney’s magic was temporarily fading. At very least, Treasure Planet garnered mostly positive reviews, a boast that Atlantis cannot match. While the Michael J. Fox-led film lacks the charm of its predecessors and successors, it still has fans. In VibaFleischer’s case, she also happens to enjoy some Pokémon.

7 An Enchanted Journey (Through Kanto)

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Depending on whether this takes place pre-Enchanted or post-Enchanted, Giselle might be in for a rough ride as a Pokémon trainer. Presented as THE stereotypical Disney princess, Andalasia’s pampered teenager lacks the self-efficiency required to travel across Kanto or Johto. On the other hand, Ash is only ten-years-old and he seems to be doing okay! Granted they are allowed time to adjust and a helpful companion, virtually everyone should be able to catch wild Pokémon and experience the joy of Gym battles.

If Giselle can handle New York City, she can survive anywhere!

Pavlover sees Giselle as a trainer who fancies leaf Pokémon, although her team does seem like it would struggle against any fire-types. Enchanted’s Amy Adams’ shaped protagonist does not understand the importance of balance.

6 Call Of The Wild

PokéPrincess 25 Disney Kids Characters Reimagined As Pokémon Trainers

Mowgli cannot be classified as royalty, although he does hold a special place in the jungle. The Jungle Book was released during the mid-’60s when Disney was trying to move away from its fairy tale formula. Pigeonholed between The Sword in the Stone and The Aristocats, Mowgli’s lighthearted but entertaining adventure remains a highly regarded narrative, one that propelled its live-action remake to 15th place in Disney’s box office charts. Citron–Vert’s tribute raises more questions than answers, specifically when it comes to Mowgli’s relationship with Pokémon. Assuming the character’s backstory survived the transition, Mowgli must have been raised by Pokémon. Is he really a trainer? Or, does the boy actually consider himself to be a wild Pokémon? The animals might change but The Jungle Book remains the same.

Mark Sammut grew up on the PlayStation 1 and has been playing games ever since, although he is no longer limited to just Sony consoles. Be it RPGs, shooters, platformers, or racing games, Mark’s area of expertise covers a wide range of genres and topics. That goes beyond video games as well, extending to mediums like anime and western cinema.
