Pokérus Pokémons Secret Viral Infection Explained

Most people would not be excited to learn that their game has a secret illness waiting to attack their team, but for Pokémon, getting infected by the Pokérus virus is a rare, contagious gift. The Pokérus virus, which was put into the games during generation II, infects Pokémon in a player’s party. Once infected, the Pokémon will gain an ability that most hardcore trainers desperately want: the Pokémon’s EVs (Effort Values) will increase by double during all battles. Because of this, players are constantly on the lookout for a way to contract Pokémon’s Pokérus for their team.

The Pokérus virus in Pokémon is caught in a few different ways. It can appear naturally in a player’s game, but with the odds a potential 1 in 21,845, it is more likely to find a Shiny Pokémon than to contract this EV boosting disease. However, if a player happens to contract it naturally, or trade someone for a Pokémon where the virus is active, they can start spreading it to other Pokémon in their party after a battle, so long as there is a Pokémon adjacent to the affected one, and they haven’t already caught it.

Spread of the Pokérus virus happens only when it is active. A Pokémon can be contagious for 1-4 days in game. However, players can pause this timer by putting the Pokémon in storage or admitting it to the daycare. While the Pokémon is ‘paused’ however, the virus can’t spread. Players can tell if their Pokémon has caught the virus, as it will appear in their status bar when fighting or when their summary is opened for players to view. The virus also cannot be healed by any in game items or by bringing the infected Pokémon to the Pokécenter. The only thing to do is wait for the virus to run its course.

Pokémon’s Secret Virus Boosts Players EVs

When a Pokémon recovers from their infection, they are immune to catching it again. A small face will appear in their summary showing that they have had the virus and that it is no longer active. However, even though the virus is gone, the effects are still in play. Meaning that the Pokémon is still able to gain double EVs during all the battles it engages in permanently. No matter how powerful the Pokémon who catches Pokérus is, infection will only make them stronger.

While catching the virus used to be quite difficult in generations past, thanks to wireless trading via mechanics like Wondertrade, getting a Pokémon with Pokérus is much more common in recent games. Whether it’s a Pokémon who actively has the virus, or who has recovered, getting a Pokémon via trade who has the double EV gain feels just as special as getting a Shiny Pokémon. For fans of the Pokémon games, taking advantage of these hidden mechanics is half the fun of playing, and it only adds to the wonder that is the entire series.
