Angel Grove High School is one of the multiple high schools featured in the Power Rangers universe. It is especially known for being the high school of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. When the Rangers are not fighting bad guys like Rita Repulsa or hanging out at the Angel Grove Youth Center and Juice Bar, also known as Ernie’s Juice Bar and Gym, they can be found at school, trying to blend in without exposing their Ranger identities.

However, before the 2017 Power Rangers movie, it had been a long time since Angel Grove High School had received any screentime, meaning that knowledge and trivia involving the school may have been forgotten, if it was known at all. Here are ten things about the high school you may not have known about.

10 The Faculty Had It Out For Bulk And Skull

Student duo Farkas Bulkmeier and Eugene Skullovitch, also known as Bulk and Skull, were the resident bullies, pranksters, and downright punks. These things made both of them easy scapegoats for the faculty. Many faculty members such as the Principal, Mr. Caplan, and teachers such as Mr. Wilton and even kind-hearted teacher Ms. Appleby were quick to punish Bulk and Skull for the most minor of mishaps.

Whether the two got a bad grade on an exam or started a food fight in the cafeteria, the result was often the same and the two would find themselves in detention.

9 Angel Grove Is A Fictional Town

The shows Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers Zeo took place in the city of Angel Grove, California, the town after which its resident high school is named. Angel Grove, and by extension Angel Grove High, was created for the Power Rangers universe.

Furthermore, Angel Grove is thought to be loosely based on the real-life city of Los Angeles in Southern California with Angel Grove High School likely being based on local high schools and districts in the surrounding area. The city and its high school are just two of many locations and fixtures created for the show.

8 Three Different Power Rangers Series Take Place There

As previously mentioned, the series Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers Zeo took place in Angel Grove, California. As such, the Power Rangers from each of these respective series, including Tommy Oliver, Tanya Sloan, and Cassie Chan, attended Angel Grove High.

Angel Grove High was also brought back for the 2017 film in which original characters from the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers run were brought back and played by different actors, though Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson, who played Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Hart, respectively, made cameo appearances in the film.

7 It Held A Fundraising Food Festival

Angel Grove High comes up with interesting ideas for fundraisers. It often works in conjunction with the Youth Center for such endeavors. For this occasion, the high school and the Youth Center worked together to put on a Cultural Food Festival as a means to raise money for more playground equipment for the center.

In spite of the event being held off of the high school campus, Mr. Caplan maintained his authority at the festival because Bulk and Skull started one of their many food fights at the event, which caused Mr. Caplan to give them both detention.

6 It Held “Teacher For A Day”

In the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers third season episode, “Wizard for a Day,” Angel Grove High held a day in which students were selected to switch places with teachers in a day called “Teacher for a Day.” The ever-strict chemistry teacher Mr. Wilton chose to switch places with Rocky DeSantos because the two did not get along very well.

After watching Rocky struggle to teach chemistry, encountering Rito Repulso (an amalgamation of Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd) and struggling through Rocky’s history class, Mr. Wilton became more sympathetic to Rocky’s performance in his classes.

5 The Youth Center Is Not Part Of The School

As mentioned before, the Youth Center often works in conjunction with Angel Grove High School for events such as fundraising with a food festival or recognizing the parents of students with a Parents’ Day. Furthermore, many of the high school students hang out and/or work at the Youth Center when not at school, or fighting off villains in the case of the Power Rangers.

However, the Youth Center is not actually part of the high school. In fact, the fact that it had and needed additional playground equipment implied that the Center was open to children of all ages, meaning it wouldn’t be suitable to be fully combined with a high school setting.

4 It Is Strict About Its Student Records

In Power Rangers Dino Thunder, a series that does not take place in Angel Grove, civilian student and aspiring reporter Cassidy Cornell tries to uncover information about students at Angel Grove High, particularly Rangers like Tommy Oliver in an attempt to uncover the identity of the White Ranger in the hopes that the story would pave way to an actual job in journalism.

In spite of her best efforts, she is unsuccessful in obtaining any student records, including Tommy’s, because of the high amount of security enforced at the high school.

3 It Has An Odd Grading System

While the grading system is not relaxed, it does seem quick to reward top-performing students. The first example is when Billy Cranston, the original Blue Ranger, was informed by Mr. Caplan that he was graduating early from Angel Grove High due to exceptionally high grades, with no mention if Billy had had enough credits or taken all of the classes required for graduation.

The second instance was when Justin Stewart, the Blue Turbo Ranger and child prodigy, was put into the ninth grade as a twelve-year-old, again due to exceptionally high grades. This latter transition makes slightly more sense since it is more common for middle and junior high school students to skip grades.

2 Its Sports Were Inclusive

Sports were not often covered in the television show outside of martial arts. However, Tanya Sloan, the Yellow Ranger for a time, is depicted as an athletic teenager on the Angel Grove High softball team, typically the girls’ counterpart to the baseball team.

Tanya was so talented, though, that she earned a spot on the baseball team alongside high school boys. This brought up a moment of contention between Tanya and her then-boyfriend Shawn, causing them to break up because Tanya did not want to deal with Shawn’s resentment toward her.

1 It Was An On-Location Set

Unlike some shows that use a set in a production studio, Angel Grove High for Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and Power Rangers Zeo was filmed on location at Ulysses S. Grant High School for the high school exteriors in Los Angeles, California, more particularly the Valley Glen neighborhood. Angel Grove itself was filmed in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita, among other surrounding cities.

It is unknown if Grant High was used for the Angel Grove High scenes in Power Rangers Turbo, but since other filming locations are the same as the other two series, it is highly likely that this was another shared filming location.
