Fans of Saban’s long-running Power Rangers franchise are eager to get their first proper look at the upcoming film reboot, which is expected to come during San Diego Comic-Con next week. Until then, every scrap of marketing material is being poured over for clues about the tone and direction of the film – one that reimagines the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show from the early 1990s.

The 2017 Power Rangers movie features a new cast and a new interpretation of the Rangers mythology – one that has continued on for 20+ years of continuity right up to this day, through different Power Rangers TV shows. Now, the first character posters have arrived for the film, offering a stylish look at the latest big screen iterations of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers leads Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Zack.

As previously confirmed, the new film retains the original five Rangers’ character names, but changes up the arrangement of the team’s ethnic makeup – likely in order to avoid unfortunate scenarios such as Black and Asian actors being cast as the Black and Yellow Rangers, as was the case with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ first season. The new images prominently match new stars Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger), Becky G (Yellow Ranger), RJ Cyler (Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger) and Ludi Lin (Black Ranger) with their respective colors and the franchise’s iconic lightning-bolt symbol. Have a look, below.

The Power Rangers movie’s storyline retains the same basic premise as the Mighty Morphin TV show, wherein Earth is attacked by malevolent alien witch Rita Repulsa, who threatens to unleash an army of monsters. To combat her, Rita’s ancient enemy Zordon summons five local teenagers to take up the mantle of Power Rangers; who then don armored suits and use martial-arts, space-age weaponry and sentient transforming robots called “Zords” to thwart her plans. Elizabeth Banks is portraying Rita, while Bryan Cranston recently signed to play Zordon.

Debuting in the early ’90s and becoming an instant pop-culture phenomenon, Power Rangers was created by combining English-dubbed action and special-effect footage from Japan’s long-running Super Sentai childrens’ action series with new footage of American actors performing as the “un-masked” Rangers. While the series was criticized for violence in its day, it remains among Millennial audience’s most cherished nostalgia franchises. The 2017 film is being touted as a potential start of a mega-franchise for the studios Saban and Lionsgate.

Power Rangers opens in U.S. theaters on March 24th, 2017.
