Everyone has a favorite character on Pretty Little Liars. But everyone’s least favorite character is most likely “A.” Throughout the series, the Liars received threatening text messages from A, and they were constantly tormented. A seemed to know everything they were doing.

Later revealed to be Charlotte “Cece” Drake (Vanessa Ray), the Liars could never stop A from ruining their lives. The villain wouldn’t rest, and she seemed to get eviler as the show progressed. Take a look at these 10 ways A got worse and worse throughout the show’s seven seasons. Can you really blame the Liars for jumping every time they received a text message?

10 Exposing Byron’s Affair

During the show’s first season, Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) and her family had drama outside of her involvement with A and the Liars. Her father, Byron (Chad Lowe), had an affair with a graduate student at Hollis College. Aria witnessed the affair, but she was persuaded by her father to keep it a secret from her mother, Ella (Holly Marie Combs).

Aria was split between her loyalty to both parents. A decided to take matters into her own hands and exposed Byron. A only continues to torture Aria later on in the show by threatening to expose other secrets, including her relationship with Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding), and ruining Ella’s engagement with another man. A was far too interested in Aria’s family.

9 Hanna’s Dentist Appointment

In the season four episode “Bite Your Tongue,” Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) has oral surgery at the same dentist’s office as Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse). While there, she tries to find files about someone who switched Alison’s X-rays with the teeth of the person who was actually buried in her grave. It seems like a great plan, but A is always one step ahead of everyone else.

During her appointment, a member of the A-Team put a gas mask on Hanna and left a threatening note inside her tooth. The note read: “I told you. Dead girls can’t smile. Stop looking.” A used to send text messages to the Liars or leave notes inside lockers, books, etc. But now A was leaving a note inside Hanna’s tooth? She’s just gone too far.

8 Locking Aria In A Box

The famous season three Halloween episode, “This is a Dark Ride,” is probably one of the best episodes of Pretty Little Liars. There was so much suspense as the characters were all together on a train.

There were a few clues in this episode that made fans question if Aria was a member of the A-Team. However, those theories went out of the train window when Aria is drugged and locked inside a box with Officer Garrett Reynolds’ (Yani Gellman) dead body. At one point, the box is almost pushed off the moving train. The Liars were in scary situations before this, but A never actually almost killed one of them until this episode, showing just how evil she’s become.

7 The Dollhouse

The fifth season finale and sixth season premiere shocked fans when the Liars were kidnapped by A and brought to her “dollhouse.” The rooms are exact replicas of the girls’ bedrooms. They can’t escape, and if they do something to retaliate, they’re punished.

A has been cruel before, but this episode showed how she was now even worse. She tricked the girls into thinking they’re harming each other. They’re forced to choose one friend to be tortured, or else they’ll all be harmed. Spencer even wakes up covered in (what she thinks) someone else’s blood. That’s just cruelty.

6 Tracking The Girls

After the Liars successfully escape the dollhouse, they suffer from severe cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) wants to practice shooting a gun to protect herself. Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) can’t sleep unless she takes anti-anxiety pills.

Weeks later, the Liars find out A surgically implanted them with tracking devices while they were unconscious in the dollhouse. A used to just follow the Liars around, but now she wants to spy on them by using technology. It’s beyond creepy.

5 Putting Hanna In Captivity

At the beginning of the show’s seventh season, Hanna is captured by “A.D.,” the next version of A after Cece was killed. Just when the Liars think their torment is long over, A.D. emerges, tormenting them even further.

Hanna is held in captivity in a barn. She’s burned by a cow prodder, starved, and she doesn’t know if she will ever be able to escape. Hanna already lived through a nightmare in the dollhouse, but this experience was even more brutal.

4 Making Alison Think She Was Insane

Towards the end of the sixth season, Alison begins having hallucinations about her mother (Andrea Parker) and Detective Wilden (Bryce Johnson). Everyone thinks she’s just tired, but the hallucinations won’t stop.

It’s revealed that the hallucinations weren’t because of Alison. She was tricked into thinking she was mentally insane by her husband, who was working on the A.D. team. Hasn’t Alison already been through enough? Playing with her mental health isn’t a joke.

3 Stealing Emily’s Eggs

While Alison is in the mental institution, she’s artificially inseminated with Emily’s eggs to get pregnant. Emily donated her eggs for financial purposes, but A.D., being the evil person she is, stole the eggs.

While the outcome was positive, with Alison and Emily having adorable twin daughters, it was still a cruel act. A.D. shouldn’t have stolen Emily’s eggs, as she was planning to donate them to a couple who desperately wanted children. The original A (Cece) probably wouldn’t have gone this far.

2 Blackmailing Aria

Throughout the series, A constantly tries to get involved with Aria’s relationship with Ezra Fitz. He’s her high school teacher, and A threatens to expose this information to the public.

During the seventh and final season, A.D. decided to take things up a notch from A’s original torments. She blackmails Aria (once again) with a letter Aria wrote in high school, in which she accused Ezra of sexual assault. She never intended to submit it to the police. If she did, Ezra would go to prison. So, to protect her fiancé, Aria secretly joins the A.D. team to keep the villain happy.

1 The Secret Twin Sister Storyline

Fans either love or hate the show’s series finale. The episode reveals that Spencer has a secret twin sister, Alex Drake, and that she has been A.D. the whole time. She tormented the Liars with a board game and she plans to replace Spencer in Rosewood.

Fans say it’s the worst storyline in the whole show. While it was meant to be shocking and a unique twist, fans weren’t thrilled with the reveal. Spencer is abducted and held in captivity for reasons out of her control. Alex’s harsh treatment with Spencer was uncalled for.
