Professional athletes from across the spectrum are amazed at how fast Sonic the Hedgehog really is. Although they’re not quite sure why they’re saying so in front of a camera.
Sonic the Hedgehog (the movie, not the game) comes out next month. But before that happens, we get to see some more Sonic ads, and one of them will be running during the biggest game event of the year.
Sadly, that game event is the Super Bowl and not the Overwatch League’s world championship. Maybe one day.
The good news is that the Super Bowl still commands stupendously high prices for running even a 30-second ad spot. This means that Sonic’s latest trailer will have a big budget. And what did Paramount decide to spend that money on? A whole bunch of celebrity endorsements.
Only those celebrities are all professional athletes. This trailer is just a rollercoaster of hype and disappointment.
First up, we have New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas amazed at Sonic’s running speed. Next, there’s Christian McCaffrey, running back for the Carolina Panthers. He calls Sonic’s spin moves “legendary.”
Allyson Felix is the 2012 Olympic Gold medallist for the 200m sprint and both the 100m and 400m relays, as well as the 2016 Gold medallist for the 100m and 400m relays. She should know a thing or two about moving your feet fast, and she says that Sonic “makes us all look slow.”
2019 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch may use a car, but even with 500-horsepower at his beck and call, Sonic is “just a blur out there.”
The real question here is whether or not any of these pro athletes even know who Sonic the Hedgehog is. Felix and Busch might be old enough to be from the Sonic generation that grew up on the Sega Genesis, but those two NFLers are likely Mario boys. Sellouts.
Wiz Khalifa though–that’s a man who is definitely down with Sonic. The legendary stoner and game-player teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty, and Seuco the Child to create the theme song for Sonic’s movie. Called “Speed Me Up”, the music video features 16-bit Sonic and his pixelated companions as they try to outright Robotnik, aka Jim Carrey.
