South Korean developer Npixel has revealed that their secretively titled Project S will become Chrono Odyssey and has its sights set on launch for 2022. Currently, Npixel plans to begin testing in 2021 and will be available on PC, consoles, iOS, and Android.

Chrono Odyssey is described as an epic fantasy about time and space, with the organization Idraiginn waging war against gods. Npixel promises an exploration intense experience with large-scale battles, immersive stories, realistic visuals using Unreal Engine 4, and unique job systems. Cris Velasco, the composer behind God of War, Starcraft, and Overwatch, will also headline the soundtrack.

Npixel is home to former Netmarble developers with plenty of experience in the mobile game space. They’ve already seen successful ventures into funding rounds and will release their first MMO, Gran Saga, in South Korea early next year on January 15. However, Chrono Odyssey looks quite different and opts for a bit of a darker, more high fantasy aesthetic akin to Final Fantasy 14 but more realistic. There’s no UI and gameplay reveal just yet, but the reveal trailer does offer us a lengthy look into a troubled world.

Originally, Npixel’s more light-hearted MMO Gran Saga was slated for a 2020 release, but like many titles this year it saw a delay. It sounds like Chrono Odyssey has long been in the works, with mentions of the title under its previous name, Project S, dating back to earlier this year.

Regardless, Chrono Odyssey runs into stiff competition in a space that’s hard to crack into, but it’s certainly one of the prettier MMORPGs on our radar. It’ll have to go head-to-head with games that already dominate the space like Final Fantasy 14, which has a big update planned for next week, and beloved oldies like World of Warcraft Classic, something Blizzard has years of content already planned for. 2022 is a long way away, so we’ll see then how Chrono Odyssey shapes up against the competition.
