Although Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water is usually pretty linear and guides you along a set path, there are a few instances where it’ll ask you to find things yourself.
One of these times is at the beginning of the Fifth Drop, the Veiled House. You’ll immediately find yourself outside the Doll Shrine (which you should remember from the Fourth Drop). You’ll be tasked with finding Rui, who has gone missing somewhere in the house.
You’ll be controlling Ren as you walk around the house looking for Rui and, unlike other sections of the game, there will be no Spirit button to hold down and be instantly guided to the objective. That means it’s a good old fashioned game of hide-and-seek.
Without any guidance on where to go, the only thing you can do initially is to walk around the house and occasionally run into ghost children. These are simply here for you to take photos of and get extra points, and aren’t important to the actual mission of finding Rui. If you want to get an SS rank on the mission, then you’ll want to search out the other spirits, but if you just want to find Rui and carry on, then ignore them.
What you actually want to do is head for the closet on the upper right side of the map. It’s called Sanctum Hallway E on the map and can be found right next to where you’d head outside to the hanging yard.
The most difficult part about this mission is that it’s not very clear what you’re supposed to do, even if you go to the right location. When you enter the closet, you’ll hear a strange noise and get an arrow pointing you towards the floor. This arrow means there’s something of interest nearby, but it usually indicates an item. In this case, it’s telling you to take a photo of something.
Equip the Camera Obscura and then look at the floor. Initiate a Phantom Expose to reveal Rui. After doing this you’ll be reunited and allowed to continue the mission. You just need to return back to the main room of the Shrine of Dolls to carry on the fifth drop.
