Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 will use far less power than the PS4 – at least when the console’s gameplay has been suspended.

The world is currently trying to battle climate change – or at least some of it is – to slow and perhaps even reverse the damage being done by the actions of the human race. This is being done via using alternative methods to create power and energy, and also by people switching up their diets. Plant-based foods are far less detrimental to the planet than processed meats and other animal by-products.

It turns out Sony is also trying to do its part. When it comes to the next generation of consoles – the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett – most of the focus has been on graphics, gameplay, release dates, and power. How eco-friendly a console might be isn’t something many people take into consideration when deciding which one to buy, but it should be.

Sony will be hoping it is a factor consumers take into account once the next chapter of the great console war begins. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO, Jim Ryan revealed at the UN Climate Summit that its next-gen console will use less power than the PS4, reports Eurogamer. There’s a slight caveat, though. It will only be less power-hungry when gameplay has been suspended.

To put it in terms everyone can understand, this is when a console is on standby. Considering the number of noise PS4s make even when they are doing almost nothing, this is a good change for a number of reasons. Ryan divulged that the PS5 if that is indeed what it’s eventually christened, will use 0.5W while on standby. “If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes,” he explained.

Many people will probably see this news and shrug. However, let’s be honest. Despite every generation of console consisting of a war between two heavy-hitters and everyone taking sides, the differences between the two are often subtle. Something like one using far less energy than the other while on standby might be what sways a large chunk of potential customers who are on the fence. Plus, gamers will soon be able to do their part in trying to save the planet.
