A recent update for the PS5 YouTube app quietly enabled full HDR support for video playback. Sony’s PlayStation 5 features myriad bells and whistles, from 4K support and 120fps capabilities to lightning-fast loading speeds and a controller that feels ahead of its time. For some reason, though, the new console lacked HDR functionality with its dedicated YouTube app at launch.

Several other noteworthy features were conspicuously absent at the console’s launch, as well. The inability to expand internal storage with an SSD constitutes but one example. Day one buyers also found themselves unable to customize PS5’s control center. And who can forget the growing pains of trying to manually discern between whether you were playing a game’s PS4 or PS5 version? Fortunately, Sony alleviated these pain points and a litany of others across PlayStation 5’s many system software updates. Every so often, though, a surprise update goes live, complete with fixes that some may not have known existed.

As reported by FlatpanelsHD (via Wccftech), the PS5 YouTube app received a new update yesterday, November 29. This much is evidenced by a patch filing that appears on Prospero Patches; however, the contents of the update do not appear on the website. FlatpanelsHD reader Aha claims the recently released changes for PS5’s dedicated YouTube app revolve around the addition of HDR support. That’s right, if the patch works as allegedly intended, video playback through the console’s YouTube application should now include HDR capabilities. Of course, PlayStation owners will need to enable HDR support on their system and ensure their TVs run the imaging technique.

Why the PlayStation 5’s dedicated YouTube app took over a year to receive full HDR support is a mystery that may never be solved as far as the public is concerned. At least the problem has reached a resolution. This didn’t count as the only streaming app with missing features at launch on PS5, either. Some users may recall that PS4’s and PS5’s Disney Plus app finally added 4K output earlier this year in the application’s 3.01 patch.

Sony launched the PS5 over a year ago in mid-November 2020, a release that proved historical in terms of record-breaking sales figures. The system quickly became the fastest-selling console of all time, for one. And it’s since gone on to achieve astronomical sales numbers, moving over 13 million units worldwide. Due to ongoing stock shortages, however, the PS5’s sales momentum is beginning to slow down.
