If 2021 has proved anything when it comes to the world of video games, it’s that platformers like Ratchet & Clank and Psychonauts 2 are still both in demand and worthy of attention. Once upon a time, platformers were one of the most popular genres. In fact, platformers are where many of today’s biggest developers got their starts.
Insomniac became a household name thanks to its popular Spyro the Dragon games for PlayStation and its ongoing Ratchet & Clank series. Sucker Punch, the developers behind Ghost of Tsushima, wowed players with the Sly Cooper series. And Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter and Crash Bandicoot franchises were gaming icons long before the studio became known for the Uncharted and The Last of Us. Nintendo’s Mario still makes a splash with each new platforming game, but those are few and far between.
While the golden age of platformers is long gone, to be replaced in modern times with an endless stream of shooters, there is still demand for classic 3D platforming action. The positive reception of both Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2 and Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart shows there is still fun and commercial success to found with these types of games.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart And Psychonauts 2 Prove There Is Still Demand For 3D Platformers
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Psychonauts 2 each released to great reviews. A PlayStation 5 exclusive, Ratchet & Clank proved to be a showcase for Sony’s console, highlighting the potential of the PS5 DualSense controller’s unique features and the console’s speedy load times. The long in-production Psychonauts 2 proved Double Fine is still capable of putting out bigger budget titles, and just goes to show Microsoft was wise to acquire the studio known for its bold ideas and quirky style.
But with both those titles now released, there aren’t any major 3D platformers on the horizon for fans to look forward to, which is a shame. While there have been smaller releases over the past few years like Yooka-Laylee and A Hat in Time (and the unfortunate Balan Wonderworld), big-budget platformers outside of remakes are simply few and far between. While there is no doubt platformers don’t sell as well as big-budget shooters – or in Insomniac’s case, Spider-Man – there is still an audience for well-crafted collectathons that transport players to crazy new worlds and star charming, family-friendly characters.
There is little chance Double Fine will be jumping to develop a Psychonauts 3 after such a long production cycle for its most recent game, and Insomniac currently has its hands full building out an entire Marvel video game universe with Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. That means there isn’t likely to be new platformers from either studio anytime soon, though if fans are lucky a new Mario platformer could come from Nintendo in the next few years. With that being said, it will likely fall to smaller developers to continue breathing life into the beloved 3D platforming genre.
Though the fans who grew up playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot have grown up, there is still a demand for 3D platformers with tight controls, wacky characters, and fantastical worlds filled with items to collect and secrets to find. With such a great reception for Psychonauts 2 and Ratchet &: Clank Rift Apart, perhaps more developers will realize the 3D platformer is a timeless genre, and that there is still an appetite among players for more double-jumping, collection-based adventures.
