PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been named Game of the Year at the 2018 Steam Awards.

The battle royale title, which actually gave the genre its jump start that lead to massive cultural phenomena like Fortnite and Apex Legends come to the fore, was voted in as 2018’s best Steam game by fans, who were prompted to name their favorites across eight awards.

The results have all been compiled and were revealed during a ceremony aired by Stream.tv this weekend, and PUBG came out on top in the Game of the Year category.

“Maybe it was its immersive gameplay, or its gripping story… its well-crafted characters, immaculate design, or addictive multiplayer. Whatever the reason, the winner of 2018’s Game of the Year Award is an instant classic,” Steam announced.

The game is certainly deserving, having left the gaming universe in awe following its release. Unfortunately, Fortnite took over and even that is now being overshadowed by Respawn and EA’s launching of Apex Legends, a BR based on the Titanfall series that amazingly garnered 10 million users in its first three days.

While PUBG has walked away with the majority of the plaudits for the said category, the game will face a major challenge where competing with Fortnite and Apex Legends is concerned this year.

The Fix PUBG campaign, which ended in November, was a step in the right direction as the developers sought to address the most concerning problems and performance issues in the game. But it looks like it could be a very difficult 2019.
