Pyukumuku Might Finally Get The Love It Deserves In New Pokemon Snap

New Pokemon Snap needs to belong to the unconventional Pokemon. We know that the fan favourites are bound to be there, but unlike the main series games, we don’t need to worry about stats or team builds or anything tactical. It’s pure aesthetic. If you look cute or cool or interesting, you should make the cut – here at TheGamer, we’ve already had a look at the ones confirmed so far, and we reckon it’s a cracking selection. But today, I want to talk about one Pokemon in particular: Pyukumuku. Maybe New Pokemon Snap is finally its time to shine.

I’ve always enjoyed Pyukumuku. The name alone is fun to say. To save you Googling – since Pyukumuku is not that well known – Pyukumuku is a little black mousey Pokemon with pink spines on top and a white cotton tail, except the tail can extend and become a huge, Mickey Mouse style hand. This Pokemon is the perfect Pokemon Snap star, because it is so forgettable and dull in the main games. It has the same stats as Ponyta and Sealeo, except it doesn’t evolve into anything. In Pokemon Snap though, where all it has to do is look good on camera, Pyukumuku comes to life.

I recently spoke to two nature photographers about New Pokemon Snap to get a sense of how well their profession had translated into the trailers. Turns out, it’s pretty realistic, but that’s not what I want to talk about today. One of the photographers had only a passing knowledge of Pokemon from the Pokemon Go fad, and came into it without any preconceived ideas about which Pokemon are good and without any favourites to play. She singled out Pyukumuku (and its buddy in the trailer, Corsola), as being the most adorable of all the creatures on show. She clearly has excellent taste.

In a game like New Pokemon Snap, stuff like that matters. It will likely pull in some casual fans, and it lives or dies by how it looks. It needs to use Pokemon aesthetics, rather than abilities or the tried and tested structure, to make sure players understand everything of this world. Pyukumuku’s attacks are very photogenic thanks to its weird hand tail, so it’s perfectly suited to these needs.

There are a lot of other great ‘mons in the trailer, not to mention loads more that we haven’t even seen yet. I don’t expect anyone to come away from New Pokemon Snap thinking that it’s the Pyukumuku show, but I fully expect it to be many peoples’ favourite picture. Unless you know the full PokeDex in detail, you might not know how Pyukumuku’s tail works, and that means a load of people will be surprised when it suddenly waves at you. Its status as a relatively lesser known Pokemon is in its favour here; it means not only will most players not know its unique gimmick, it will also get a fresh chance to make a first impression. We’ve seen Pidgey by now, no one is going to be that interested. But Pyukumuku has a chance to make a big splash, and might just steal the show from under everyone’s noses.
