The esports industry, like many others, has been unquestionably impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Planned tournaments dating all the way back to when lockdown orders were first instituted in China, as well as numerous others continuing into the rest of this year, have all had to reschedule. In the wake of numerous cancellations, however, some tournament organizers have been figuring out new ways to organize competitive play online. Among these is Red Bull, who, in conjunction with computer monitor company AOC and competitive gaming platform FACEIT recently announced a 2v2 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament with a rule set that features some of its own unique twists on classic CS:GO gameplay.

These four-player matches take the place of CS:GO’s standard 5v5 format. In reducing the number of players per game, Red Bull has introduced an entirely new game mode for the tournament that it’s calling “Hold The Flag.” Winning in Hold the Flag requires capturing and holding a central control point for either a total of 45 seconds or more time overall than the opposing team. A single round lasts two minutes, and matches end once a team has won three rounds.

Along with this game mode, Red Bull’s tournament is introducing five original maps designed for the new mode. Each map also offers its own unique environmental twist; a Castle map is more-or-less a standard arena, a Garden map includes jump pads, a Speedway map features a capture point surrounded by easily-accessible high ground, a Matrix map introduces teleporters, and a Himalaya map limits players’ weaponry to pistols.

In total, the tournament will include up to 128 teams of two from 19 countries across Europe and Asia, as well as four additional qualifying rounds for either teams with members from multiple countries or those in regions with countries not otherwise hosting a qualifier.

Winning teams from each country or region will then be eligible for the Red Bull Flick EU Pro Invitational. There, teams will compete for prizes from a pool of 20,000 euros.
