It looks like Rockstar may have created yet another online money-making machine in Red Dead Online.

Take Two, the parent company of Rockstar, declared in its quarterly earnings report that Red Dead Online has been a great success so far for the company. Apparently, people like playing digital cowboys so much that the game is growing at an even faster rate than Grand Theft Auto Online did when it was first released.

Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was quick to praise the game, declaring that “Red Dead Online is performing better than Grand Theft Auto Online did at the same stage of the game.” While that’s certainly great news for the company, he didn’t give any exact numbers on this growth, so we don’t know for sure if this statement is completely accurate.

There is a strong chance that he’s telling the truth though, as Red Dead Redemption 2 has thus far sold 24 million copies worldwide, which is certainly an achievement worthy of corporate praise and would make for a fine base for Red Dead Online. It still has a long way to go before it can even begin to compare to Grand Theft Auto V’s 110 million copies, but it’s still nothing to sneeze at.

Grand Theft Auto Online has given Rockstar a pretty good reputation in the world of online games. It has also made the developer boatloads of money. Red Dead Redemption 2 on its own is already a huge hit both financially and with the critics. So, with all that goodwill, the fact that Red Dead Online is already being earmarked for huge success by Rockstar, its fans, and the gaming industry as a whole is not particularly surprising.

However, Red Dead Online hasn’t gotten off to the best start. Fans have been complaining about things like the economy and its gold bar currency, as well as the fact that there isn’t a whole lot to do right now. To its credit, Rockstar has addressed a lot of these problems, but there’s still a lot of work to be done with the cowboy simulator before it is can even come close to living up to its car-stealing big brother.

Rockstar has pledged to continue to add more and more additional content to Red Dead Online, and there’s little reason to doubt it. Grand Theft Auto Online originally started out a little short on things to do, but once heists and other activities were added in, it went on to become one of the biggest online games to date.

If Rockstar can do the same thing for Red Dead Online, then it should be a regular smorgasbord of cowboy content in just a few years time.
