Red Dead Redemption 2 What The Brass Compass Is For And How To Get It

Even years after its initial release, there are still things in Red Dead Redemption 2 that continue to confuse players. That’s assuming they even realize they exist. The world is so vast, packed full of small details and systems that you could, and realistically may already have, spent dozens of hours exploring without seeing everything. One item in particular is very unique in more ways than one. The Old Brass Compass is a one of a kind item but isn’t used for what you might think. If you are looking for this rare item, and want to know how to use it, this guide will point you in the right direction.

How To Get The Brass Compass In Red Dead Redemption 2

Because you can actually get this item quite early on in the game, this guide will have very little in the way of spoilers. Aside from some location and character names, the only thing we’ll give away is how to complete one stranger mission, and obviously what and how to use the Old Brass Compass.

The Old Brass Compass is a reward you can earn from completing a very specific stranger mission. You can go and pick this mission up as early as chapter 2 when you reach the Horseshoe Overlook in the story. The stranger in question is named Francis Sinclair, and he can be found in his home in West Elizabeth. It is to the Northwest of Strawberry and Northeast of the Owanjila Dam.

Once you speak to him you will start the Geology for Beginners mission. This quest will task you with going out and locating ten different rock carvings and sending delivering them to the Post Office. A small thing to note here is that you can collect all ten and mail them all at once rather than going back to the post office between each one.

First Rock Carving Location

The first one you should go after is West of Strawberry on the Western side of Owanjila lake. You will spot it on a large boulder jutting out of the ground right off the shore.

Second Rock Carving Location

Next you will make your way North of Strawberry. If you look at the map you should aim for where the T in the word “West” lies. Once there, keep your eye on the cliffs to inspect this carving.

Third Rock Carving Location

Moving along, go just Northwest of Flatneck Station in New Hanover. Between the station and Dakota River is a patch of rough terrain. Go in and find this carving on a small cliff face to the South.

Fourth Rock Carving Location

Going farther North now, head slightly Southwest from where the A in Ambarino lies on the map where Mount Hagen is in Grizzlies West. Simply follow the trail up and keep your eye on the mountainside near the top to spot this easy carving.

Fifth Rock Carving Location

Directly South between the B and A in Ambarino is the Window Rock and Granite Pass. Go to the very top of the river that runs under the pass, on the West side, look up on the left side of the rocks.

Sixth Rock Carving Location

Just across the Dakota River from the last carving, South of Widow Rock and just Northwest of the C in Cumberland Forest, ride up the hill and spot this next carving dug into the side.

Seventh Rock Carving Location

Immediately to the West of Bacchus Station above Fort Wallace is another mountain you need to scale. Go up from the side facing the river and way up above on a narrow ledge is the next carving.

Eighth Rock Carving Location

For this carving you want to follow the train tracks until you’re above the N in New Hanover and below the Moonstone Pond. Coming from the North is your best way up this mountain, where you’ll find this carving facing the North almost at the peak.

Ninth Rock Carving Location

Head almost to the extreme Northeast side of the map to the Elysian Pool. On the Northeast bank, right off the path, on the North is this large carving on a massive rock jutting out above the ground. You can spot this one without even going off the road.

Tenth Rock Carving Location

Our last carving is above Annesburg and to the West of the N in Roanoke. Take the path West and toward the Deer Cottage. The carving is not far off the road, near the top of the ridge.

Collect Your Reward

Once you have finished scouring the map for all the carvings make a trip to the post office and send all ten of your carving coordinates off. After that, you’ll need to sleep, or do something else, for a full 24 hours before you can collect your mail in return. After a day you’ll get a notification to pick up some mail at the post office, which includes an invitation from Francis Sinclair.

Ride all the way back to where you first picked up the quest and you’ll trigger a short cutscene once you enter the house. The scene will end with you outside and without the compass. You need to turn right around and go back in, look on the table, and grab the compass before you leave or you’ll miss it entirely.

What Is The Brass Compass For?

So, after all that work, what can the Brass Compass actually do for you? Well, it’s actually a crafting ingredient you need to make the Raven Claw Talisman. Take the compass to the Fence and you can make this talisman for $29.

Once you have the Raven Claw Talisman in your inventory all your weapons will have a 20% reduction in degradation.
