Warning! SPOILERS for Red Notice

The action-comedy heist caper Red Notice has released to streaming on Netflix, and the movie’s ending brings some surprising twists while potentially setting up an assortment of heists for Red Notice 2. With a limited theatrical run before hitting Netflix, Red Notice sees Dwayne Johnson as FBI agent John Hartley in hot pursuit of professional thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds), who’s on a mission to steal all three of the legendary eggs of Cleopatra. At the same time, Booth has some serious competition in the mysterious underworld thief Sarah Black (Gal Gadot), known better by her thief codename Bishop.

Hartley soon finds himself framed for the theft of one of the eggs, as he ends up as Booth’s cellmate in a Russian prison. With Bishop already having the first egg in her position and Booth knowing the location one of the remaining two, Hartley and Booth join forces to beat Bishop to the other eggs and effectively clear Hartley’s name. This won’t be so easy though, as Bishop’s reputation as a clever and skilled thief is a well-deserved one.

Johnson and Reynolds’ buddy movie chemistry and rivalry with Gadot’s Bishop carry the somewhat True Lies-esque Red Notice, which derives its title from the designated status placed upon the most wanted criminals by Interpol. However, Red Notice has a few tricks up its sleeve, too. Here’s where Red Notice goes in its ending, and what that could entail for Red Notice 2.

Red Notice’s Heist Explained

Red Notice Ending & Sequel Setup Explained

After Hartley and Bishop manage to escape the Russian prison, they head for Valencia, Spain where the second egg is located, only for Bishop to thwart their plan once again. Hartley and Booth end up being captured by Bishop, who tortures Hartley to get the location of the third and final egg out of Booth. Eventually, Booth gives in, directing Bishop to Egypt where the third egg is.

However, that’s just what Booth wanted Bishop to think. As Hartley and Booth, despite their feud in Red Notice, manage to escape the captivity of Bishop’s accomplice Sotto Voce (Chris Diamantopoulos), Booth reveals that he misdirected Bishop to Egypt, and the third egg is actually hidden in an underground Nazi bunker in Argentina. Hartley and Booth then head to the bunker to retrieve it, only to encounter Bishop once more, who didn’t take Booth at his word and, knowing the duo would escape, followed them to Argentina to get the final egg.

After Booth uncovers the egg in the bunker and Bishop drops in to steal it from them, Hartley’s Interpol associates, led by his former partner Inspector Urvashi Das (Ritu Arya of The Umbrella Academy) arrive to arrest all three. In the ensuing gun battle, Hartley and Booth team up with Bishop to escape, the three commandeering a Nazi limo found in the bunker, escaping through the tunnel on the opposite end of the bunker and falling down a waterfall. Booth gets hold of the egg and thinks he finally has Bishop beat, until he learns the truth: Hartley was working with her all along.

Booth’s initial arrest in Bali facilitated the theft of the first egg by Bishop. From there, she and Hartley plotted for him to be arrested, in order to enlist the unwitting help of Booth in stealing the second egg in Valencia. Hartley and Bishop then feigned the former’s torture (though Hartley did have to endure some actual pain to make it work), and Hartley’s “escape” with Booth led he and Bishop right to the final egg in the movie’s Raiders of the Lost Ark-style climax. As Hartley explains to Booth, his father, per his earlier stories, was a genuine con man, but rather than make a career in law enforcement, Hartley decided to “Beat him at his own game.” Now with the third egg in their possession, Hartley and Bishop make off with it, declaring their respect for Booth while leaving him handcuffed to a tree to be apprehended by Das, but the ending doesn’t stop there.

After their escape, Hartley and Bishop sell all three eggs, which are presented as gifts at a wedding in Cairo, only for Das and Interpol to arrive to finally retrieve them, with Ed Sheeran as the attending wedding singer cameo finding himself unfortunately caught up in the ensuing arrests. Hartley and Bishop still make off with $300 million from selling the eggs, or so they think. Several months later, Booth catches up with Hartley and Bishop, informing them that he tipped off Das about the secure account the money was stashed it, with their assets being frozen and Booth declaring the trio “even.”

With Das on the way to arrest Hartley and Bishop, Booth proposes the three join forces on a new heist. Though Hartley is reluctant to accept the offer, Bishop persuades him that they need the loot from the score now, and that he and Booth make a great team. In the end, Hartley and Bishop depart their yacht with Booth, right before Das and Interpol arrive to find it unoccupied.

How Red Notice’s Ending Sets Up A Sequel

Red Notice Ending & Sequel Setup Explained

After failing to apprehend the trio, Das puts Hartley, Bishop, and Booth on Red Notice. Meanwhile, Netflix’s most expensive movie concludes with the three thieves preparing for their next big score in the Louvre. With this, the ending sets up many different directions Red Notice 2 could go in.

Booth describes his proposed score to Hartley and Bishop as “double the payout, triple the challenge.” Robbing a historic landmark like the Louvre certainly fits both, with the massive museum having a bountiful treasure trove of priceless works of art the trio could heist. Of course, with stolen art from the Louvre sure to attract international media attention, the challenge Booth refers to would be in stealing the loot and selling it without getting caught, especially with Das and Interpol on their trail, all three now Red Notice fugitives and Hartley as a former FBI agent in particular surely a hot target for Interpol.

Alternatively, Red Notice 2, which Gadot is interested in, could kick off with Hartley, Bishop, and Booth already having pulled off their score from the Louvre and plotting their next while avoiding detection by Interpol. Red Notice sets up numerous possible scores for Red Notice 2. What will be notably different this time around is that Hartley, Bishop, and Booth will all be partners in crime right from the start.
