For a certain generation of gamer, Calvin and Hobbes were the comic book duo that simply defined a childhood. The serialized comic strip ended in 1995, but books and reprints in local newspapers around the world have kept Calvin and Hobbes alive for almost a quarter-century, bringing them to an entirely new generation.

Calvin and Hobbes has also inspired a lot of fan art, mostly because merchandising opportunities for the brand are basically non-existent (creator Bill Watterson famously hated the idea of merchandising and has refused many lucrative deals throughout his life). That means anyone looking to have their own Calvin and Hobbes stuff basically has to make it themselves.

Such as Reddit user kptknuckles, who’s making fantastic Magic/Calvin crossover cards.

It started with a pair of cards from the multiplayer-focused set Battlebond. Calvin stands in for Pir, Imaginative Rascal, while Hobbes is the substitute for Toothy, Imaginary Friend. The actual cards take advantage of Battlebond’s “Partnering” ability, which allows you to search your library for the partner card whenever you play the other partner from your hand.

Pir and Toothy were basically inspired by Calvin and Hobbes, as many other Magic players have noted in their custom works. Reddit user kptknuckles has merely taken it to the next level by not only re-drawing Pir and Toothy, but also making custom cover art for Islands, Forests, Mountains, and the land-fetching spell Untamed Wilds.

One suspects that kptknuckles is going to eventually have enough cards for an EDH deck as Pir and Toothy are ideal EDH commanders. Many similarly-themed EDH decks are named after Calvin and Hobbes and even feature similar crossover art.

We’ll be keeping an eye on kptknuckles to see how many more cards get the custom art treatment. Sadly, we know that Watterson would prevent his art from ever appearing on official Magic: the Gathering cards, but it’s still nice to see them even in an unofficial capacity.
