Legally Blonde 3 should have a lot more Jennifer Coolidge in it, according to Reese Witherspoon. The sleeper hit, Legally Blonde, was released in 2001 by MGM, starring Witherspoon in one of her most iconic roles as Elle Woods, a UCLA graduate who follows her ex-boyfriend, Warner Hunington III (Matthew Davis), to Harvard Law School. Elle experiences a culture shock while adjusting from her sorority life to the demanding coursework of law school while trying to get Warner back from his new fiancé, Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair). Along the way, she meets Paulette Bonafonté (Coolidge), a nail tech who quickly becomes her friend and confidant. The film was based on the real-life experiences of Amanda Brown, who chronicled her experience and published a novel also named Legally Blonde.
The film received a sequel in 2002 that follows Elle’s adventure to Washington, D.C. to make animal testing illegal. Then, in 2007, Legally Blonde The Musical was released on Broadway, which followed the events of the novel and the first film. Since then, fans have been wanting a third film to round out Elle’s story. Hopes for the next film were kickstarted again in 2018, when MGM announced they were finalizing Elle’s return. Initially, Legally Blonde 3 was scheduled for a 2020 release date, but not much progress was made until Mindy Kaling (The Sex Lives of College Girls) and Don Goor (Brooklynn Nine-Nine) were announced to be writing the script in 2020.
The latest update on Legally Blonde 3, reported by People, comes from Witherspoon and Coolidge’s recent interview with Backstage. Witherspoon says the project is still in the works, and that “It’s a lot of me and this lady,” pointing to Coolidge. Coolidge says she doesn’t know too much about the film yet, but she’s “dying to know more.” Previously, Coolidge had joked about being replaced in the upcoming film, but Witherspoon reassures that the film will not be without plenty of Paulette. Coolidge: “Reese is the keeper of the keys. … I know so little of what’s happening with that, so I can’t wait to hear what Reese has to say today.
Witherspoon: “I wish I could take a poll of everybody watching and say like, ‘what do you want to see us do?’ I mean, Just the idea of being anywhere with Jennifer would be the greatest. And visiting these characters 20 years later to see what’s changed about them and what hasn’t…It’s a lot of me and this lady. That’s all I have to say!”
There seems to be a lot of secrecy around the film, however, Pamela Adby, an MGM executive, confirmed that Elle is a mother with a career in the upcoming film. However, there hasn’t been confirmation about the status of the script, nor that a filming schedule has been set. There also remains a lot of uncertainty that Luke Wilson, who played Elle’s husband Emmett Richmond, will return. The fact that there is still a lot in the air for this film makes it difficult to even estimate a release date.
The film is beloved by many and has inspired a whole generation of women to pursue law as a career. There have been debates about the film’s place as a touchstone of feminist film, and it has continued to foster its message of perseverance to audiences of all ages. Hopefully, if the film is further delayed, it is to maintain the aspects of the original film that meant so much to its audience. Legally Blonde celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and hopefully Legally Blonde 3 will materialize soon.
