Why didn’t Red Dead Redemption 2 hit the Switch? Apparently, it was simply a matter of unfortunate timing.

However you feel about Nintendo’s plucky little hybrid handheld, you’ve got to admit that the Switch deserves some kudos. Arriving in the wake of the unfortunate Wii U, it sure had its work cut out for it. After a bumpy start, the likes of Super Mario Odyssey helped get that momentum going, and sales have been super solid ever since.

Nintendo’s own big-hitters like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee have been selling like the proverbial hotcakes, but that’s a given. The truly interesting thing about the Switch is that third-party developers have been embracing it too, to a far greater extent than most of Nintendo’s recent systems.

That’s a huge deal for the Big N, there’s no denying. The issue in that department, though, is that their hardware just cannot compete with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S. You can’t expect it to, and it isn’t intended to, but there it is. The reality is that some of the bigger and more ambitious multi-platform titles would just be too much for the Switch, without some hefty compromises.

Or so you’d think, at any rate. According to Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime, the main reason Red Dead Redemption 2 missed out on a Switch release was simply that the system was released too late.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week, Reggie discussed the great success that the Switch has been enjoying, but also a couple of recent shortcomings of the system. One major one being: Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t on it.

When asked if he’d like Rockstar’s masterpiece to have appeared on Switch, Reggie stated:

“Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there. But again — and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process — Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities.”

“Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch… that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.”

As anybody who’s spent time with the game will tell you, Red Dead 2 is a game of vast possibilities, dizzying scope and… well, it could be one of the all-around biggest games ever made, in terms of the world and freedom to traverse it. Is this really something the Switch could have handled? It’s all moot anyway because it didn’t happen and isn’t likely to, but there it is.
