In arguably the biggest news in Overwatch League history, reigning 2019 MVP, Jay “Sinatraa” Won, is retiring from professional Overwatch to compete in Riot Games’ newest competitive FPS VALORANT. This news came from ESPN before being confirmed by the San Francisco Shock and then expanded on by Sinatraa himself.

Sinatraa reached the pinnacle of professional Overwatch in 2019. He became league MVP, won the Grand Finals, won the 2019 Overwatch World Cup with Team USA and took home World Cup MVP honors. He had one of the most dominant seasons of any esports player ever regardless of which game and carved out a spot for himself forever in the history of the Overwatch League. Since making a name for himself as a 17 year-old cocky kid dueling the South Korean powerhouse in the 2017 Overwatch World Cup on Tracer, Sinatraa left a lasting mark on the Overwatch scene that will never fade.

In a TwitLonger, Sinatraa explained losing his passion for Overwatch, citing this was a decision he sat with for a long time before deciding to do it. When you lose passion for something, it makes it hard to do day-in and day-out and at the highest level, it nearly becomes impossible to perform when you do lose it. It seems like Sinatraa made the right decision before he couldn’t bear the weight any longer. In classic Sinatraa form, he left out the VALORANT part of the whole situation during the TwitLonger, but confirmed he would be moving to that game going forward in the thread.

From a cocky, talented kid unaware of playing as a team, to becoming the greatest player in the world, Sinatraa did it all. He cemented himself as the best and reached the ultimate pinnacle people can only dream about. He fulfilled the Chosen One prophecy he was tagged with when entering the league, and he did it at a blistering pace, learning what it meant to be a leader and teammate along the way. He will be definitely be missed, but his legacy will remain.
