Capcom has just announced that its most recent Resident Evil games are getting a next-gen upgrade. Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes as well as Resident Evil 7 will get “visual enhancements” on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S “later this year.”
Capcom didn’t provide much else in terms of details, but we can likely assume the usual graphics enhancements of 4K resolutions and 60 fps, or perhaps a performance upgrade that provides better frame rates at variable resolution. Ray tracing, enhanced shadows, and better visual effects are also likely possibilities for upgrades.
Best of all, these visual enhancements are coming absolutely free. ”Those who currently own these games on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be eligible for a digital upgrade at no additional cost.”
PC players haven’t been forgotten. Capcom mentioned in a follow-up tweet that all three games will receive the same visual enhancements on PC in a free update once the next-gen console patches go live.
It’s funny to think that we’re already well over a year into the current generation of consoles and we’re still getting upgrades for last-gen games. Cyberpunk 2077 recently got its next-gen update that brought most of the visual enhancements seen on PC to PS5 and Xbox Series X, along with a host of upgrades, bug fixes, and quality of life improvements. GTA 5 will also receive its next-gen update in less than two weeks with similar enhancements, although you’ll only be able to transfer one character to your current-gen platform of choice.
In other Resident Evil news, Capcom might have just teased remasters of several classic Resident Evil games. Resident Evil Outbreak and Code: Veronica both received up-rezzed artwork on Capcom’s official site, a move that many believe wouldn’t have been made at all if there wasn’t something being cooked up for these older titles.
