With all the rumors surrounding Capom creating a Resident Evil 4 Remake after the successful remakes of the second and third games, survival horror fans have a lot of speculation regarding exactly how the company may approach such a massive project. The previous remakes were willing to take creative risks that completely altered the gameplay while respecting the original source material, but both of these remakes left out one of the most memorable side modes in the Resident Evil franchise: the Mercenaries mode.

Despite being one of the most beloved games in the studio’s catalog, Resident Evil 4 is often cited as the installment in which Capcom began pushing the games further from survival-horror and more towards third-person action. The game featured a new perspective that allowed players more freedom, combat prowess, and agility which ultimately led to the series taking its first step toward the Micheal Bay-styled explosions and action featured in the overall disliked Resident Evil 6. The series has since returned to the survival horror end of the spectrum with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. These installments were fantastic at establishing haunting atmospheres that left the player on edge throughout the entirety of their experiences, but these games failed to mesh with the popular Mercenaries mode found in Resident Evil 4 and 5.

Resident Evil 2 Remake offered additional content by adding side missions that expanded upon the story of various characters throughout the main campaign, and Resident Evil 3 Remake added a one-on-three multiplayer mode which was met with a mixed reception. Resident Evil 3 Remake was overall more action-focused than the two titles that preceded it, so when the Mercenaries mode was left out, some fans may have been disappointed.

Resident Evil 4’s Mercenaries Should Come Back

The Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil 4 is a side attraction from the main game in which players are placed into an arena filled to the seams with loot, and enemies to fight while under a timer. It featured multiple characters to unlock by achieving high ranks on specific stages, and it rewarded players for being a sharpshooter. Resident Evil 5 ramped up the Mercenaries mode by allowing players to team up cooperatively. This mode was a fun and engaging way to test player abilities which the newest games neglected to implement.

Capcom recently announced Resident Evil 8: Village during Sony’s PlayStation 5 event and it seems to be continuing down the survival-horror route that the previous entries have followed. If Capcom does release Resident Evil 4 Remake, it’ll serve as an excellent action-filled contrast to the next mainline game, and Mercenaries would be a perfect fit for it. A new Mercenaries mode with modern hardware could allow for massive environments filled with significantly more enemies and loot to discover and perhaps even more than two players at a time, all of which would help to add replay value to one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time.
