Resident Evil: The Board Game only just started its Kickstarter campaign a few days ago and it’s already broken $1 million in funding. In fact, as of the time of this writing, the Kickstarter is at $1.2 million USD from well over 5,000 backers.

Stoneforge Games, creators of the previous two Resident Evil board games as well as the Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter, and Dark Souls board games, have returned to where Resident Evil began. Raccoon City’s Special Tactics and Rescue Service (STARS) has been called in to investigate the strange and violent murders happening in and around Spencer Mansion. The team of between one to four players must search the mansion, uncover its secrets, and get out before being overrun by terrifying monsters, undead zombies, or worse.

It took just 20 minutes for the game to reach its initial goal of £100,000 ($136,000 USD), and since then the campaign has been blowing past milestones and unlocking a bunch of new sculpts and figures for playable characters. Several alternate costumes have appeared based on the video games, such as Army ’02 Jill Valentine and Director’s Cut ’97 Chris and Jill, but also two entirely new playable characters such as Forest Speyer and Edward Dewey–two secondary characters that die fairly early on in the original Resident Evil video game.

The next milestone comes at 300 likes and comments, which will unlock Casual ’02 Chris Redfield. It seems like there are still tons more possible characters and figures to unlock, and there are 13 days left for the Kickstarter campaign to reveal them.

In other Resident Evil news, Resident Evil Village recently broke 5 million in sales and is on track to be the best-selling Resident Evil game of all time. It’s still not the best-selling Capcom game of all time (that’s Monster Hunter World at 20 million in sales), but 5 million is certainly an accomplishment for Capcom’s premiere horror franchise.
