Respawn Entertainment has been at the top of their game lately, having released two of 2019’s biggest titles. Now, it seems as though the company is expanding, as they have announced a new studio in Vancouver.
According to an interview with Respawn COO Dusty Welch, conducted by GamesIndustry.biz, the company is celebrating with an additional studio in Vancouver, Canada. The studio will be primarily focused on Apex Legends’ development, as the game continues to be one of the industry’s most popular battle royale titles on the market.
Part of this is to take the pressure off of the Californian Respawn development studio so that the developers in California can work on other projects while Apex Legends’ development gets delegated elsewhere.
Further, Welch adds that, in ten years, he wants to be able to positively view the company’s accomplishments, which necessitate more developers at Respawn for such a goal.
Welch also discussed the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Respawn and its development processes. Specifically, he commented on how the virus has restructured development as a whole. He said that Respawn’s development may transition to remote work on a permanent basis and that external hires don’t necessarily have to have the perspective contained by “four walls.”
Ultimately, Welch closes out by crystallizing the point that Respawn Entertainment aims at continual growth. According to Welch, this doesn’t necessarily mean directly competing with other companies. However, it is emphasized that the developers at the studio should share a similar passion for the game in development, whether it’s Apex Legends or otherwise.
There appears to be a lot of optimism on Respawn Entertainment’s part going forward. The company’s 10-year celebration seems to be a huge part of that, now that it has multiple notable titles under its belt. 2019 alone saw the releases of the aforementioned Apex Legends as well as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, both of which were very well-received.
It’s unclear what the future holds for Respawn, but its expansion of development says that Apex Legends will be continually managed at the same time that Respawn develops new properties and, perhaps, sequels to existing ones. Titanfall appears to be out of the question there, but the developer’s positivity is promising for upcoming Respawn games.
