In Returnal, you will often find enemies or doorways that are protected by shield barriers. This can be frustrating, since it protects an enemy, or might even block off valuable items.

This guide will cover everything that you need to know about both red and yellow shields and how to destroy them.

How To Destroy Red Shields

Red shields often cover enemies to give them a protective layer from your gunfire. To destroy red shields, you need to use the Atropian Blade. Hit an enemy with its melee attack to break the shield. This will also usually kill them instantly.

Red shields can also block side paths and other interesting areas. If you want to break through them to uncover more of Atropos, simply hit the shield with a melee attack to cut through it.

How To Destroy Yellow Shields

Yellow Shields often appear on doorways, rather than enemies. Unlike red shields and barriers, these cannot be broken with a basic melee strike. The Atropian Blade won’t be able to cut through these straight away, as you will need to find a specific Artefact first.

  • To cut through yellow shields, you need to find the Blade Balancer artefact.

This can spawn randomly on your adventure, so you need to cross your fingers if you want to get through a yellow shield. The Blade Balancer increases your melee damage, allowing you to cut through this more durable shield.

However, it is important to note that all Artefacts, including Blade Balancer, will disappear when you die. They do not stay in your inventory when a cycle restarts. Even if you get lucky and find Blade Balancer if you die then it will all be for nothing, as you will have to wave goodbye to all Consumables and Artefacts.

How To Destroy Vines

Although they aren’t energy fields like the previous shields, vines can still get in the way of important items. These look like overgrown roots that have blocked off a passageway, which may contain useful items.

To destroy vines and break into new areas, you can use the Atropian Blade, just like you do with red shields. Simply hit them and the vines will retract, allowing you to pass through. You do not need an Artefact like Blade Balancer to destroy vines. This is useful as they usually appear in the first biome, the Overgrown Ruins, when you probably won’t have many items.
