It’s kind of ridiculous how well the Reviver Plus works. I can put on a watch, press a single button in Pokemon Go, and I’ll automatically catch every Pokemon I see and spin every PokeStop I pass by. It feels like cheating, but after all these years playing the old-fashioned way I don’t mind having a little help now. The Reviver Plus doesn’t exactly play the game for you, but it can help earn candy, keep you bag full, and grind XP when you’re too busy to do it yourself – I’m wearing one right now and caught three Pokemon in the time it took me to type this intro.
The Reviver Plus is a black, pill-shaped device that comes with a silicone wrist strap about the size of a Fitbit. It has just a single button that you use to cycle through the menu, change settings, and check the battery. Setup is a breeze. All you need to do is open Pokemon Go and navigate to Pokemon Go Plus in the settings. I had some trouble at first because I connected the Reviver Plus to my Bluetooth before I opened the game, but as long as you go straight into Pokemon Go and connect there you shouldn’t have any problem.
Compared to the official Pokemon Go Plus, the benefit of the Reviver Plus is that it does everything automatically without you needing to press a button for every catch or sign-spin. It also has a display, so you can keep track of your battery life and quickly change settings. There’s an official app called Pocket Center that’s meant to work with the Reviver Plus, but it crashes every time I open it on my Pixel 4 XL. Luckily I haven’t found any reason I would need a separate app anyway.
As much as it helps, there are plenty of limitations. You can’t choose which PokeBalls you’re using or control how you throw them, so don’t expect to make much progress on your research assignments. If I’m stationary, my Reviver sometimes tries and fails to catch the same Pokemon 15 times or more, wasting lots of resources. If I’m sitting near a PokeStop for a while, the Reviver doesn’t know when it refreshes, so it will continuously try to spin the sign and fail, giving you a notification every time.
Speaking of notifications, there’s a different vibration sequence for everything that happens, but after a week I still haven’t learned which one is which. Is it a short buzz then a long one for disconnected, or three short ones in a row? It’s like Morse Code – I don’t understand it at all, but I keep the vibration on just so I know it’s still working. Every buzz makes me feel like I’m Team Rocket scooping up hordes of Pokemon with a net – and I love it.
There are some quality-of-life upgrades the Reviver needs before I would consider it an essential accessory for serious Pokemon Go players. There needs to be some kind of report when you check the game to see what you’ve got and what items you’ve collected. The recently caught filter helps, but it would be so much better if there was some way to get a status report too. I’d also like a way to auto-delete certain items because I find I’m running out of space almost immediately when I start using the Reviver. On top of that, it would be nice to be able to limit how many times it tries to catch the same Pokemon so I’m not wasting all my PokeBalls on a feisty Kricketune, and it wouldn’t hurt if it displayed the time since I’m wearing it like a watch anyway.
What the Reviver Plus does do, it does extraordinarily well. You can’t just turn it on and expect it to play Pokemon Go for you, but it’s a great tool to help speed up the grind. It’s certainly a lot more useful than the official Pokemon Go Plus thanks to the onscreen settings, and it’s just as easy to use. I’m going to get a ton of use out of the Reviver Plus when I run errands and travel, and I’m even using it while I hang out around the house. I’m mostly catching lots of Baltoy, but at least it’s good XP.
