It was no surprise to fans of The Real Housewives of Atlanta when Nene Leakes announced she will not be returning to the show for season 13. After she walked off the last reunion by shutting her laptop and leaving the room, never to come back and return, fans saw there may be some tension between the women and NeNe. According to her, the women are not the only reason she decided to quit and will never return.
NeNe joined one of the top-rated shows on Bravo back in 2008 for its very first season. She starred alongside Kim Zolciak, Sheree Whitfield, DeShawn Snow, and Lisa Wu. Throughout the series, NeNe was beloved by fans even though she could be quite shady to the other ladies on the cast. Her funny one-liners and huge personality are what drew so many fans to the OG housewife. While she will be missed from the cast, NeNe will likely not be making a return for the third time.
On September 17, 2020, NeNe announced she will not being joining the cast of RHOA for season 13. She made the announcement in a YouTube video that was shared on her channel. “I have been on an extremely, extremely long, exhausting, tiring, emotional negotiation,” she revealed to her subscribers. “There has been a lot of emotion flying from both sides. it has been hard and I have made the very hard and difficult decision to not be a part of Real Housewives of Atlanta season 13.” She went on to thank Bravo and the fans for letting her be apart of an all-Black female cast and the importance of it. A week after her departure, it was clear NeNe was not leaving the show on good terms as she implied Bravo forced her out of the show. When a fan on Twitter asked if Bravo would ever give her a spin-off show she replied, “They don’t think I deserve to work at all in any capacity.”
Shortly after Andy Cohen had NeNe’s frenemy, Wendy Williams on Watch What Happens Live. He and Wendy discussed NeNe’s exit from the show with Wendy dissing Nene the whole time. The reality was not pleased and went on a Twitter rampage calling Wendy an “ole cocaine head” and Andy an “ole racist.” After the drama began to cool down, NeNe revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she did not like the offer she was given. “I had an offer on the table. I did not think the offer was a fair offer,” she said. “I wish them all the best, really, I do. But I don’t think that’s the place for me.” Two months later, NeNe tweeted out a link to a petition to ask fans to boycott the Bravo network. The petition alleged that the network unfairly treated “their African American talent,” specifically NeNe and Mariah Huq from Married to Medicine. Back in September, NeNe alleged there was systematic racism within Bravo and that she was not related as fairly as her “white counterpart.”
NeNe will never return to RHOA seeing as she’s burned too many bridges with the network. First, she calls Andy a racist on Twitter, then she publicly talked about the negotiation process, and lastly, she is trying to boycott the network. Even if she wanted to return, it is very unlikely Bravo would be welcoming with open arms.
