Riot Games confirms the 2020 League of Legends World Championship will happen beginning September 25th. The entirety of the event will take place exclusively in the city of Shanghai in order to limit travel.

“Hosting the event in a single city will reduce travel throughout the tournament and give us the ability to more closely control the show environment. We continue to use the guidance from various health organizations and local and national authorities to prioritize safety for our players, fans, and everyone involved with bringing Worlds 2020 to life”, states Riot in their most recent blog post.

The World Championship Finals will be the inaugural event at the new Pudong Soccer Stadium. The announcement of a stadium this large continues Riot’s tradition of making the Finals a spectacle. The attendance of an audience depends on local health guidelines. Riot confirms that the early stages of the event will not have an audience, focusing more on the digital viewing experience.

Fans in North America will have to wait another year to see the event live. North American will now host the World Championship in 2022, with China getting a second chance in 2021. This makes sense considering China holds the largest audience for League of Legends. While North American fans may be disappointed, Riot CEO Nicolo Laurent reassures fans that the 2022 event will be worth the wait.

Riot confirming the event relieves a lot of worry from teams and fans. With the status of Worlds being unclear, fans started to believe their favorite teams may be playing nothing. The cancellation of the Mid-Season Invitational and the Covid-19 not being in sight continued to bolster this worry. The World Championship represents the culmination of the year’s competition.

This year in particular brings multiple interesting storylines that fans need to come to fruition. Can Mad Lions, the European team filled with rookies, continue their dominance on the international stage? Can Cloud 9 and Team Liquid surprise the competition, showing that North America is not a joke? Can JD Gaming and Invictus Gaming continue China’s dominance? Teams who earn the right to compete at the international stage deserve a World Championship. Fans deserve a World Championship. Thankfully, Riot found a way to make the tournament happen.
