Riot Wants To Improve The Behavioral Systems In League Of Legends

Yes, League of Legends still has a bit of a behavioral problem. Riot has been trying for years to stop League’s infamously toxic players from shooting their mouths off, but it never seems to be enough.

Last weekend, Riot announced a slight change in tactics for 2022. Rather than continue to focus on the 5% of players who are repeat offenders (who are likely to get just get banned anyway), Riot is shifting gears to the 95% of players who are normally pretty good but occasionally have a slip. According to Riot’s own numbers, 86% of toxicity reports originate from the 95% of “usually well-behaved” players.

The problem with the 95% is that it just takes one of the 10 players in each match to shout something awful for it to ruin the whole game. Temporary strikes and bans are apparently not enough to get the 95% to 100%, so Riot is adding a bit more carrot to go along with its stick.

Honor 2.0 was a system implemented in 2018 to reward League of Legends players that play nice. Starting soon, a new special recall VFX will be awarded to players “who are Honor 5 or have received an Honor from either a non-premade or two premades in their last game.” Riot is also working on an exclusive new skin as well which will be added as part of the End of Season rewards.

The other thing Riot is looking to focus on is verbal abuse. Riot was less specific about how it plans to tackle verbal abuse, but it did say, “There are a number of exciting projects we’re planning, including an upgrade to more advanced models to increase Verbal Abuse detections.” Once these new modes are implemented, Riot expects to see “improvements in this area by up to 10x.”

But technology can only go so far. Ultimately, the players themselves have to decide to be good, and that’s something that Riot reminded players in its recent blog post. “Because it’s not just about building systems to influence human behavior. It’s also about the humans who play the game. It’s about you. And you’re here reading this, so I know you care about our community too.”



In other League of Legends news, Riot announced a new investment in the French animation company that made the Arcane Netflix series. It looks like Riot is definitely pressing ahead with its League of Legends cinematic universe.
