Riverdale: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Jughead

Riverdale fans have a soft spot for Jughead Jones, but the writer turned gang leader has many inconsistencies and plotholes surrounding his character.

Each character on Riverdale is unique and distinctive. And just like everyone else in this wacky town, beanie-enthusiast Jughead can be wildly unpredictable and off-brand every now and then. Unlike his comic-book counterpart, this Jughead devours novels, not burgers. He is morally sound, yet indulges in some serious criminal activity now and then too. He is sharp as a pin, yet sometimes his actions and plans are so harebrained that viewers are left confused and incredulous.

Fans love Jughead both ways, when he’s broody and typing away at Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe, or when he dons his fancy leather duds to run some gang errands. But ultimately, there are some things that just don’t add up about everyone’s favorite dichotomous FBI recruit.

10 His “Weird” Claims

The highlight of Jughead’s on-screen appearance is the meme-worthy “I’m a weirdo” speech in which he claims that he’s not a conventional teenager and doesn’t like doing normal things.

While the whip-smart writer might think he’s some kind of outlier, this doesn’t add up because he hangs out with the popular kids at school, gets milkshakes with them at their favorite haunt, and goes to parties with them, too. So his claims of being weird are not very accurate.

9 Dates Betty

Riverdale 10 Things That Make No Sense About Jughead

This one is a head-scratcher for many, especially fans of the original Archie Comics. Jughead is portrayed as asexual in most of the canonical literature, which is why his sudden attraction to Betty is jarring for some.

Besides this, Betty was very much in love with Archie at the beginning of the show, and the two rekindle some of that chemistry later too. Betty and Jughead also disagree on a lot of things, like the surprise birthday party that she threw for him, and do toxic things like dump the other through a friend (who happens to be Archie). Jughead’s romance with Betty is well-liked but it just doesn’t make much sense.

8 Didn’t Go To His Mom When He Was Homeless

FP’s irresponsible behavior rendered Jughead homeless for a long while, where the high schooler was making a home in a drive-in theater, and even at Riverdale High. He just kept packing up and moving around, but a lot of fans wonder why he didn’t just call his mom.

If Jug was older, it would be easier to understand why he wouldn’t call his mother, but he was just sixteen or seventeen and could have gone to live with her and Jellybean instead of roughing it out on the streets.

7 He Was Well-Groomed While Homeless

Riverdale’s investigative journalist is a good-looking lad, but he even looked sharp when he was homeless. Almost too sharp. Even in normal times, Jughead wears clothes that cost a pretty penny, but he looked extra well-groomed during his homeless stint.

He wears a suit on one occasion, which begs the question: how many seventeen-year-olds own suits period, let alone homeless ones? He also looked freshly bathed with no sign of wear, which would be impossible if someone were living in an abandoned, disused theater.

6 Leader Of A Gang

Riverdale 10 Things That Make No Sense About Jughead

It is absurd that a high school teenager is the “king” of a gang of petty thieves and drug dealers and that nobody in the town of Riverdale cares. Jughead being the Serpent King is completely off-brand for his broody, intellectual character, and it’s even weirder that it was handed to him from his father like some sort of royal title.

He also brings the Serpents into his school and conducts meetings with them on the premises, which should be illegal. It is also worth noting that all members get custom Serpents jackets. How does Jughead finance those? Some of these questions might never be answered.

5 Faked His Death

Jughead fakes his own death to get “free time” to focus on solving the suicide by Baxter Brothers writer Rupert Chipping, which involved Donna, Brett, and DuPont. What’s even wilder is that the FBI helped him invent this fake death story.

The only reason Jughead had to fake his death was to psych Donna and Brett out and buy time to solve the mystery, which is not sufficient enough for such a drastic measure, not to mention the trauma he puts his loved one through.

4 Works With The FBI

There are a few aspects to Riverdale that fans can suspend their disbelief for, but the fact that Jughead is hired by the FBI itself to help with cases is baffling. If the apex crime-solving body of the country actually hired teens, the world would be a different (scarier) place.

Betty’s brother Charles gives Jughead active cases to solve and asks for his help, which is just absurd since Jughead has no training whatsoever.

3 The Crime

Riverdale 10 Things That Make No Sense About Jughead

Crime-fighting, murderer-catching Jughead is not so innocent himself. As a gang leader, he gets up to a lot of (illegal) mischief himself and not just little things. He sets fire to a trailer park, transports drugs across borders, becomes an accessory to murder by helping Alice cover up the man she killed and cuts off a piece of Penny’s arm to remove her tattoo.

It is unbelievable how much crime Jughead seems okay with committing, and gets away with regularly.

2 Best Friends With Archie

Riverdale 10 Things That Make No Sense About Jughead

Archie and Jughead are best friends on the show, but they don’t really seem like it. The two barely spend any time together, as they are too busy chasing their own leads on an investigation or opening up a community gym.

They also oppose each other a lot of fundamental things that friends should agree on. Archie supported Southside High being turned into a prison, even though he knew that Jughead was intimately connected to the school and its students. Archie has also been mean to Jug a lot so it just doesn’t add up that Jughead is besties with him.

1 His Obsession With A Game

Many students were affected by the return of Gryphons and Gargoyles to Riverdale High, but no one quite like Jughead. The clear-thinking, intelligent teen was irrationally addicted to the game, and he played it for months with people like Ethel, even though he knew how dangerous it could get.

His obsession was so rabid that he didn’t even bother helping Veronica and Betty with Archie’s prison break. Now that’s weird.
