Warning: Contains SPOILERS from Riverdale’s season 6 premiere.

Riverdale’s season 6 opener revealed to audiences the shocking fate of one of its characters. The CW series originally premiered in 2017 as a reimagining of the classic Archie Comics and quickly gained popularity, becoming one of the network’s most successful shows. It follows Archie Andrews and his group of friends as they uncover the darkness hidden behind their small town’s seemingly picture-perfect facade. The show’s main cast includes KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, and Madelaine Petsch.

The Riverdale season 6 premiere comes only a month after the conclusion of Riverdale’s sporadic fifth season, which featured a time jump, allowing the series to establish new relationships and further stretch the realm of possibility in terms of story. Besides ending on a cliffhanger, the season 5 finale saw a shift in genre, one explored in seasons prior, but never fully executed. After reciting a speech first made by her ancestor, an accused witch, Cheryl Blossom subsequently cursed the residents of Riverdale and instigated the series’ first supernatural threat.

Riverdale ended its first episode of season 6 in surprising fashion and in an interview with TVLine, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa discussed what it means for the rest of the season moving forward. Fans saw part one of a five-episode event taking place in Rivervale, in which Archie gets summoned to Thorn Hill and Cheryl declares him a sacrificial lamb of sorts. She kills him and pulls out his heart, showing it to the town’s residents. Aguirre-Sacasa explains that Archie will, in fact, remain dead for the remainder of this event, and hints that he may not be the only casualty by the end of it. Read his quote when asked if each episode is its own story, or if Archie is really dead below:

No, they are serialized, so Archie is dead in Episode 2. And I’ll say this: That’s only the start of the body count for Rivervale.

The five-episode event brings fans to Rivervale, wasting no time in taking the small town they have come to know and turning it into something much darker. There is also the excitement surrounding Sabrina Spellman’s eventual Riverdale appearance as the teasers and current plot allude to. It remains to be seen how the early episodes will tie into the ending of season 5, but fans should expect everything to follow a level of continuity and come together during the season’s progression. For now, they can enjoy the event-sized scale and story of these first five episodes as they develop.

Riverdale season 6’s plot appears to be a mystery, but that is certainly nothing new for The CW hit. What is most intriguing about how Aguirre-Sacasa chose to begin it is that he, perhaps purposefully, decides not to touch on the cliffhanger ending of season 5. It will be interesting to see how he combines the elements of the five-episode event into the remainder of the season and if anything happening in Rivervale parallels any events in Riverdale.
