Longtime fans might already know, but it may shock casual comic readers to learn there is one Robin smarter than Batman. Over the years, many characters have taken up the moniker, each with their own unique skill sets and personalities. There’s the high-flying circus act Dick Grayson, the rebel turned deadly vigilante Jason Todd, and Bruce’s son, Damian Wayne. However, it’s Tim Drake who is arguably more intelligent than his mentor, and DC needs to do more to admit it.

First appearing in Batman #436 back in 1989, Tim Drake didn’t officially take on the role of Robin until Batman #457 in December of 1990. Bruce Wayne was still reeling over the death of the previous Robin, Jason Todd, at the hands of the Joker. It was a journey for Bruce to accept Tim as his new partner, one that thoroughly explained why Batman needs Robin in the first place. Like Dick Grayson before him, Tim eventually outgrew the role of sidekick in 2009 and became a new hero known as Red Robin, but his prominence as Batman’s detective heir needs to take center stage.

From the beginning, it was possible to see how Tim could grow to become better than Bruce. Batman is a master fighter, strategist, and detective, but it’s that last category that deserves the most attention. Tim Drake excels as an investigator, evident from even his first appearance. Unlike most Robins, Tim sought Batman out. Using nothing but his wits and intellect, Tim deduced Batman’s identity, a feat few in the DC Universe have been able to accomplish. He did this out of concern for Batman’s erratically violent behavior, even going so far as to implore Dick Grayson to become Robin again. Tim understood the importance of Batman having a Robin to balance the Caped Crusader’s darkness, which is the factor that ultimately led to Tim taking the job.

Tim briefly had a moment in the spotlight when he temporarily filled the role of Batman Beyond, but beyond that, Tim has meandered around the DC Universe, struggling with his own identity. Earlier this year Batman writer James Tynion IV hinted on his blog that Tim might be more prominently featured in future Bat stories. This could have been a hint to the revelation that Tim is bisexual in Batman: Urban Legends #6, but DC hasn’t showcased Tim as surpassing his mentor, especially when Batman already believes he will.

Tim is not as athletic as Dick or as tough as Jason. His skills lay in his mind, which is arguably where Batman’s are as well. Batman and Robin have to think quickly and utilize their smarts to keep up with their super-powered peers and villains. Batman was once chosen as the successor to Ra’s al Ghul, so it’s fitting Ra’s also believes Tim will be Batman’s intellectual successor. Tim is the only Robin Ra’s refers to as “detective,” the same title he gave Batman. Not to mention Tim’s computer hacking and coding skills already exceed his mentor’s, as does his mastery of multiple languages. The evidence is there. All that’s left is for DC to step up and make it official.
