Rocket League has made the exciting transition into becoming a free-to-play title in upcoming updates. Now players can bring their friends along to enjoy the fun and show off.

With any game shifting over to a free-to-play model, there are some growing pains, but the team behind Rocket League has offered a pretty reassuring breakdown of the new changes coming to the game. Whether you are new to Rocket League or a long time player, the recent changes will hopefully improve your experiences.

New Season Changes And New Competitive Ranks

Those of us that are into competitive play might be wondering how the upcoming season will be affected. However, thanks to the official press release, competitive seasons, tournaments, and the Rocket Pass all go live at the start of season 1. Now Rocket Passes will last as long as the current competitive season, meaning once season 1 is over, so will the Rocket Pass for season 1. Small reminder, if you are worried about these changes affecting your progress from the previous season, don’t worry; if anything, developers over at Rocket League have added new ways to save your progress by introducing cross-platform progression.

On top of a new season, there will be a new rank added that goes beyond the previous rank system. You can grind away at the new rank Supersonic Legend. Supersonic Legend is now the final rank in Rocket League. Grand Champion will now be split into three ranks titled Grand Champion 1, Grand Champion 2, and Grand Champion 3, respectively.

To balance the influx of new players, ranks will face a soft reset and ideally level the playing field for new players, alongside returning players. Thankfully ranked play will be locked behind the requirement of reaching level 10. We hope this requirement keeps hackers or cheaters at bay for now.

Other Changes Incoming With The New Update

While free-to-play will bring microtransactions, for better or for worse, you can at least rest easy knowing that Playstation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online will no longer be required to play Rocket League online. Additionally, Rocket ID is now being absorbed into the Epic friends list, so your Rocket ID will transfer over to your Epic Games account.

Taking inspiration from popular ping systems, Rocket League will now have quick chats to let your team know your strategies if you lack a mic. There are other miscellaneous changes, like playlist updates, and more previously announced in the past week, but Rocket League’s shift to free-to-play is shaping up to be quite an exciting change of pace. No date has been announced for the big update, but do expect the new free-to-play update to arrive sometime this month.
