The excited response to the forthcoming Detective Pikachu film’s early marketing has borne fruit, according to new rumors about the half live-action, half CGI film. The hype has apparently grown to a level where Warner Bros. is comfortable approving the second film in the series, a spinoff title featuring an as-yet-unrevealed Pokemon character from the first film. Who would have expected Ryan Reynolds voicing a fluffy electric rat would launch a potential multi-movie universe?
According to WeGotThisCovered, multiple sources have confirmed that the spinoff is already moving forward with development. Further details are obviously unavailable at this point, beyond the single confirmed Pokemon character that the film will revolve around. Otherwise, there’s no info on whether the cast, including Ryan Reynolds, will return, whether the story of Detective Pikachu will continue, or any other details.

There are technically two rumors tied to this specific Pokemon character. The first rumor is that Mewtwo itself will be a primary character in Detective Pikachu. The rumor says that Mewtwo will be a villain, but if the film proves similar to the 3DS game at all he’ll be more of an antagonist by circumstance and eventual ally.
It’s Mewtwo who is also rumored to be the Pokemon that the spinoff film will revolve around, which makes sense if he does prove to be an ally like in the 3DS Detective Pikachu game. Further information will have to wait for the Detective Pikachu film.
The decision to seemingly move forward with a spinoff revolving around Mewtwo may seem surprising to many. WB moving straight into a Detective Pikachu sequel would seem like the best course. But the truth is that Ryan Reynolds is a busy guy with 8 movies anywhere between announcement and post-production. It could be years before his schedule is open for another Detective Pikachu film. In other words, if Warner Bros. is serious about turning Detective Pikachu into a larger Pokemon series of films, they might have to do it without Detective Pikachu himself, for better or worse, and much to Mewtwo’s approval.
