Pokemon Sword and Shield took a big step forward for the long-running franchise by introducing paid DLC, expanding the story via the addition of The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra locales post-launch rather than releasing a third version. There have been rumors Sword and Shield could get a third DLC expansion, though it seems unlikely. However, according to dataminers, the upcoming New Pokemon Snap may follow this lead by releasing its own DLC.

A spiritual sequel to the original Pokemon Snap on Nintendo 64, New Pokemon Snap will bring the on-rails photography experience to the Switch tomorrow with representatives from all current Generations of Pokemon games. Advertisements have confirmed the roster in New Pokemon Snap includes Legendaries like Lugia and Mythical Pokemon like Celebi, but it’s possible the list could grow further.

This information comes from Twitter user SciresM, who posted a datamined list of the game’s roster that reportedly includes a number of blank spaces between certain Pokemon, described as “reserved IDs” with empty data that “could change in a future update, maybe.” Based on what SciresM provided on social media, the missing data looks to be intentionally placed, and doesn’t necessarily correspond to pre- or post-evolutions of monsters confirmed for New Pokemon Snap such as Meganium’s Chikorita and Bayleef.

Rumors based on datamined information should be taken with a grain of salt, as empty data could theoretically be something removed from the game during development instead of something yet-to come. However, SciresM is a member of the “Project Pokemon” fan community that has been developing research tools since 2009 with a track record of discoveries like the shiny hunting rates in Sword and Shield’s Dynamax Adventures. A report by Dexerto also points to Spanish outlet PokeXperto, which says Shroomish appeared in the game’s June 17, 2020 trailer, but not in the final product.

One strong argument for post-launch expansions is the game not being developed by Game Freak, or any first-party Nintendo studio. While Pokemon Sword and Shield took the first stab at DLC for a mainline Pokemon game, Bandai Namco is developing New Pokemon Snap due to Nintendo recognizing its strong work on Pokken Tournament, which received numerous additional fighters and a deluxe edition on Switch.

Fellow Twitter user Kaphotics, whom SciresM notes as being involved in the New Pokemon Snap datamining, quote tweets the roster image to let fans know there are no shiny Pokemon in the game, but “that doesn’t rule out future updates adding them.” Again, this isn’t confirmation of anything, but positive reviews for New Pokemon Snap suggest the game should have a successful launch, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see DLC with added Pokemon or mechanics down the line.

New Pokemon Snap releases April 30, 2021 for Nintendo Switch.
