The Nintendo Labo experiment seems to be sputtering out, as Nintendo has yet to discuss the release of any new kits, even though they just had a Direct that was begging for more announcements for products in the near future.
It seems that the Labo may be moving in a new direction, as there are rumors that the next Labo kit will be a VR headset that will hold the Nintendo Switch in front of the eyes of the player.

These rumors come from Emily Rogers of Nintendo World Report, which were later corroborated by separate reports from rawmeatcowboy of Go Nintendo. The rumors state that Nintendo is working on VR capabilities for the Nintendo Switch that will accommodate several first-party releases and that the VR functionality will be compatible with an upcoming Labo kit, presumably acting as a headset that the Switch will slot into it.
There have been rumors about VR support coming to the Nintendo Switch for a long time now. We previously reported that a VR mode had been found within the Switch’s OS by hackers, but it was in a primitive state and it seemed to have been abandoned at an early stage in development.
If these rumors are true, then it means that the future may be brighter for the Labo than we originally realized. If VR support is even possible for the Switch, it could add a lot to the replayability of games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Skyrim.
There is still the question of whether the Switch is powerful enough to replicate VR in its handheld mode. There are also concerns about how safe it would be for your eyesight to have the Switch that close to your face.
There is also the question of whether a cardboard headset would be durable or safe enough to use on a regular basis. The VR headsets made by other companies are mostly composed of plastic, which is a far sturdier substance than the cardboard used for the other Labo kits.
If virtual reality is possible with the Nintendo Switch, then it would mean big things for Nintendo, but there are still a lot of questions about the viability of such a concept that are making us doubt these rumors… for now.
