Rumor Patrol: Warner Bros. Wants ‘Legion of Super-Heroes’ Movie
A new rumor claims that – in the wake of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’s success – Warner Bros. wants to make a ‘Legion of Super-Heroes’ movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy is obviously the surprise movie success story of the summer. While it wasn’t a shock that it made bank at the box office – basically, every Marvel movie since The Incredible Hulk has – it is something of a shock that it’s been so successful, having broken numerous records and beaten out Captain America 2 for the highest-grossing domestic film of 2014.
So nobody will be surprised when Hollywood inevitably attempts to replicate that success with similar movies of a space-themed nature. And if it’s derived from a comic book? Well, all the better. According to a recent rumor, Warner Bros. and DC are already looking to do just that.
Latino-Review is reporting that Warners is in the process of “quietly sending out the DC comic book ‘Legion of Super-Heroes’ to screenwriters & their reps” to see what ideas they can come up with. If true, this would mean that Legion isn’t “in development” so much as Warner Bros. is sending its feelers out to determine if they want it to be in development.
Before we go any further, it’s important to note that we can’t’ verify the veracity of this story. LR has been very right about things before (the plot of The Avengers and Josh Brolin being cast as Thanos) and they’ve been very wrong about things before (Lex Luthor is almost certainly not a tatted up street tough in Batman v Superman). So, as ever, take this rumor with a grain of salt.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way – who are The Legion of Super-Heroes?
Basically, they’re a team of teenage superheroes from the 30th century who were inspired by Superboy’s adventures a millennium before. They first appeared in Adventure Comics in 1958 as secondary characters to Superboy and then appeared in numerous iterations – and continuities – of their own comic book, most recently in The New 52 The Legion of Super-Heroes by Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen.
And while the property was, once upon a time, incredibly popular, DC has had great difficulty with regaining that popularity in recent years, hence the many cancellations and reboots.
Though the book certainly could be classified as a space comic book – the Legion traveled all over the universe, but their base of operations was Earth – it doesn’t share much else in common with the big screen adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy. These are genuine superhero good guys, not a bunch of a-holes criminals. The books also aren’t known for being all that hilarious (one of Guardians’ most praised qualities), though that certainly could change from page to screen.
If Legion does go into development, would Superman be involved? After all, there wouldn’t be a a Legion without the Man of Steel. Of course, he was a boy of steel when he met the Legionnaires, and we all know that Henry Cavill’s Superman kept his powers a secret until the events of Man of Steel. Would Warner Bros. remove Superman from the history of the Legion? Would they make them not teenagers to start? Would these Legionnaires be edgier and darker? (It’s been done before.)
We’ll have to wait and see. That is, if this rumor turns out to be true. One presumes that Warner Bros. and DC are still a little gun-shy when it comes to “space movies,” considering their last pseudo-attempt (read: Green Lantern).
