Pokémon fans may soon get another live-action film — and the start of a proper shared universe.

According to The Illuminerdi, Netflix is currently developing a live-action Pokémon film. The movie will reportedly not be related to Detective Pikachu. Instead, it will feature an entirely new story, but one that’s connected to Netflix’s other live-action Pokémon venture.

Back in July, reliable reports emerged that Netflix was developing a live-action Pokémon series. Lucifer executive producer and showrunner Joe Henderson is reportedly heading up the project, and its tone is said to be similar to Detective Pikachu. No further details were revealed, however, so it’s unknown whether it would in any way connect to the Ryan Reynolds film. That movie seemed to be connected to existing Pokémon lore thanks to the inclusion of Mewtwo, but the franchise’s continuity has always deviated across mediums and projects.

If the new report is correct, the film and series won’t be tied to the Detective Pikachu franchise. The first film was a smash-hit when it landed in theaters, earning $433 million globally. It was also well-received by fans and critics alike despite its unusual story. Word of a Detective Pikachu sequel instantly emerged, but things have been quiet since 2019 on that front. Despite its success, fans have been eager to see a more traditional Pokémon story brought to life in live-action, and Netflix may be scratching that itch.

Netflix has had a ton of success with the series to date as several Pokémon anime currently air on the streaming service. They also co-produce the current anime, Pokémon Journeys, which will debut its next series, titled Pokémon Master Journeys, on Sept. 10. The latest animated film, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, arrives Oct. 8 on Netflix

Outside of Netflix, the new anime Pokémon Evolutions was announced last week. Unlike the main series, it won’t focus on Ash and Pikachu. Instead, it will be more like Pokémon Origins or Twilight Wings, adapting elements from the games. The trailer teased that it will visit all eight of the main game regions, bringing characters and creatures from the respective Generations to life. All eight episodes will air on the Pokémon YouTube channel and the new Pokémon TV app.

The new movie, if it arrives, will also have plenty of content to draw from. Next year will see yet another new game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which will dive into the untold past of the universe and explore the region that existed before Sinnoh. It arrives on Nintendo Switch next January.
