Actor Rupert Grint regrets the hairstyle that he sported for 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The enormously popular wizarding world franchise based on author J.K. Rowling’s best-selling books allowed audiences to watch its cast members age and grow, ensuring that today, the decade-long production has its share of embarrassments for its stars.

It’s a particularly rare thing for a child actor to grow up in one long-running film series. As enrolment at Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizarding begins at age eleven, so too did the onscreen lives of Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson. The three children found themselves at the center of a phenomenon, and as each new film in the series arrived, audiences were treated to a deepening of the characters and the challenges they faced. This in itself was arguably one of the greatest things about the franchise, as there was ample time to become accustomed to the likes of Ron, Harry, and Hermione. Even today, a decade after the final film in the series arrived, watching the eight films from beginning to end still carries its own sort of magic, as the young wizards (and witch) gradually grow and form a bond.

Yet despite all the great things about the Harry Potter franchise, not every memory is magical for its cast. While speaking with Dax Shephard on the actor’s Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard podcast, Grint made it known that he’s definitely not looking back at the haircut he was sporting in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with any sort of nostalgia. In fact, Grint even went as far as saying that the hairstyle in the series’ fourth entry is one of his biggest regrets of the entire franchise:

There were some awkward stages, for sure. My hair in film four is one of my biggest regrets. Shoulder length. I think everyone actually had a phase of having this really long hair. They liked it—it was kind of wizardy. We went through our puberty on camera. You kind of see it all. It is very cringey.

Potterheads will undoubtedly recall the hairstyle that Grint is talking about, but it’s more likely that this will remain one of those little quirks that bothers the star more than his fans. As it stands, Goblet of Fire arguably remains one of the best overall entries in the series, making it unlikely that most fans are paying any attention at all to what Grint’s hair looked like. Then again, it wasn’t just Grint who was sporting this shaggy-looking, shoulder-length do. Radcliffe also has a similar style going on throughout the film. Apparently, this style was chosen specifically for the film as it was thought to give off a sense of style that was more in tune with what the wizarding world offered. Whether or not it succeeded in this respect is a matter of opinion, and Grint seems to be unnecessarily hard on himself.

As previously mentioned, growing up onscreen was great for the franchise and fans, but it’s something that very few people can relate to. Ultimately, whatever Grint’s hair looked like in Goblet of Fire is entirely forgivable – mainly because it had zero effect on the overall quality of the film. Even if Grint had objected to it at the time, it was unlikely that a 16-year-old was going to alter the aesthetic decisions of one of the biggest film franchises of all time.
