Actor Ryan Reynolds recently shared that he often gets mistaken for both Ben Affleck and Ryan Gosling. The Deadpool actor has been busy as of late, most recently starring in action comedies Free Guy and Netflix’s Red Notice. He’s also got a full slate of projects set to release in 2022, including the time-travel movie, The Adam Project, in which he takes on the titular role.
Naturally, Reynolds’ life outside his films gets an equal amount of spotlight, as one who speaks openly about his family and, specifically, his high-profile marriage to fellow actor Blake Lively. The couple boasts more than 71 million Instagram followers combined, charming people with their humorous and sometimes cheeky jabs at one another. Many remember when Reynolds infamously cropped Lively out of a photo in an Instagram post wishing her a happy birthday. Lively responded in 2017 with her own birthday greeting for her husband, but rather than posting a photo of Reynolds, she shared an image of Gosling instead. (The post has since been deleted.)
Nonetheless, the running gag between the two Ryans clearly hasn’t died, according to Monday’s episode of the Dear Hank and John podcast (via ET Canada). It’s not just Gosling that Reynolds gets mistaken for; it’s Affleck too. Reynolds revealed one particular pizza place in New York’s East Village has believed that he was Affleck for years. And Reynolds, being the jokester he is, just lets it slide. He spoke with Dear Hank and John about his resemblances to both actors. Reynolds said:
“I do everything normal like everybody else. [The people at the pizza place] just think I’m Ben Affleck, and they’ll ask how JLo is and I’m like, ‘great, good.’ I get the pizza, and off I go … Well, the difference [between Gosling and me] is easy to spot. Ryan Gosling has blonde hair and Ryan Reynolds is a [expletive].”
Placed next to one another, the resemblance between Reynolds and Gosling isn’t exactly uncanny the longer one looks at them. Still, it’s quite a wonder that the two have so much in common, between their first names and oblong face shapes, not to mention the fact they’re both from Canada. Now that Reynolds mentions it, he and Affleck do share some similar facial features as well, but it’s not that hard to distinguish the two. Perhaps Reynolds just has that kind of face; he looks like someone familiar.
Jokes aside, it’s always refreshing to see an actor poke fun at himself and say out loud essentially what people are thinking. Reynolds’ spirited personality and offbeat humor make him perfect for roles like Deadpool or Free Guy’s, well, Guy. The actor’s success is largely hinged on doing what he’s been doing, and for the most part, that’s simply being himself.
