It’s not every day that you’re given the chance to build your criminal empire from the ground up, That’s exactly what Volition is aiming to achieve with the upcoming reboot of Saints Row. It’s been a couple of weeks since the studio dropped the reveal trailer, but series fans want more details. While a look at the gameplay will be unveiled “when ready”, we have got a bit more information.
The Saints Row website has detailed a number of features that we can expect in the new game, along with some information about your new crew. You’ll be in charge of leading your gang from a group of street thugs to a criminal empire, spanning all of Santo Ileso. However, while this is a new direction for the series, Volition has incorporated the classic assets like the fleur and purple suits.
“Rest assured, these are still very much part of the Saints’ identity,” said Volition. “We begin by showing the Saints at the start of their criminal journey, over the course of the game they form the Saints and rise to the top of the criminal underworld, reaping rewards and recruits along the way. The further they go down that path, the more you’ll see the purple ‘uniform’ come into play, and the more visually adorned with purple and fleur de lys the Saints, their HQ, and their recruits become.”
We were also introduced to the crew; Neenah is the getaway driver, Kevin is the thrill seeker, Eli is the business mastermind, and then there’s you, the Boss. “Regardless of your look you are the ultimate murder machine, that shoots first and asks later,” reads the description. “The Boss is over-confident, and doesn’t do well following orders. You get to decide who you want to be and do things you want to do, become Self Made and form the new Saints.”
The new Saints Row also boasts about having the “best ever customization”. An in-depth customization system will allow you to choose from up to eight different voices, layered clothing, and customizable vehicles that can be stored safely in your garage.
As for the setting, “Santo Ileso is a vibrant, fictional city in the heart of the American Southwest; you get to live the fantasy of building your own criminal empire in a brand new huge open-world. As it’s a new city you’ll see some familiar and recognizable stores, plus a whole host of new ones.” New radio stations will also be introduced, but there will be a separate developer update on the music.
Lastly, Saints Row will offer seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op throughout the game, which will work across console generations. There’s also “some awesome co-op surprises” which we’ll only see at a later stage.
