Saints Row: The Third Remastered Is Free On Epic To Celebrate Reboot

Playing the best Saints Row game around is probably the best way to celebrate the coming reboot.

Saints Row: The Third Remastered is free on the Epic Games Store right now, along with Yooka-Laylee and Void Bastards, but those games didn’t just get a huge reboot announcement at Gamescom yesterday. Saints Row: The Third is an extra freebie courtesy of Epic just to celebrate the coming Saints Row reboot, which coincidentally will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC.

More on that later, but first let’s talk about Saints Row: The Third. It’s probably the best game in the series, with a wacky and childish sense of humor that might seem a little dated today, but there’s really no other game that gives you HDR support while letting you slap cops with a dildo bat.

Originally released in 2011, the Remastered Third brings better lighting, textures, remodeled and up-rezzed assets, 4K support (for platforms that can handle it), an uprated Steelport that seems more alive than ever, and all previously released DLC.

It’s a trip, and one that’s well worth taking if you’ve never been on it before. Especially for zero dollars, but it’s only available until September 2.

And now to the Saints Row reboot, which just got announced during yesterday’s Gamescom festivities. The new game is a return to form for Saints Row–no dildo bats were shown in the trailer, although there was certainly plenty of guns, crimes, and general mayhem. The story takes place in a Southwest California analog and has you build up a criminal enterprise while displacing other gangs in order to gain power.

Our own Kirk McKeand got to see 15 minutes of pre-alpha footage yesterday, and although the game is more Saints Row 1+2 than Saints Row 3, there are still “ragdoll insurance scam minigames, helicopters with magnet-based wrecking balls, and monster trucks crushing parked cars.” We’ll take that to mean it retains some childishness without the need for dildo bats.

Saints Row returns on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store on February 22.
