Saiyan Spawn: 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

There’s nothing more powerful than a Saiyan… except maybe their kids. Here’s some stuff about the Dragon Ball kids that not many know.

If you really think about it, the Saiyan race is, well, boring. We love plenty of the characters from it. When they’re played off with other people from other species they can be interesting but on their own, they’re kind of boring. They’re a warrior race whose goal is getting stronger, fighting, and eating. What I’m saying is that there aren’t going to be Saiyan painters or Saiyan film directors roaming around Planet Vegeta.

That’s what makes Saiyan children much more interesting. With Goku and Vegeta settling down on Earth with families, we got to see what happens when you mix Saiyan blood with human women. With that, we get multi-dimensional characters with interests and hobbies. They may not be as strong as their papas, but Trunks, Gohan, Goten, Pan, and Bulla have captured fans’ hearts (for the most part) with their enthusiasm, comedy and how we can relate to them more than Goku and Vegeta.

These Saiyan children are put into situations that we can relate to. With Gohan, we’ve seen him grow completely from a child fighting on pure emotion to falling in love and raising a child. Goten and Trunks are the resident pranksters of Dragon Ball. Future Trunks has the weight of the world on his shoulders and Pan and Bulla are just cute. Let’s dig into these characters more with 25 incredible things you didn’t know about DBZ’s Saiyan kids.

23 Pan’s Name Is Everything DBZ

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Dragon Ball has a history of having fun with characters’ names. The Ginyu Force is all named after dairy products, Saiyans are all named vegetables and so on. But the naming of Pan is some next level naming that puts all of the other Akira Toriyama names to shame. Let’s dig into Pan’s nomenclature.

Pan’s name might be Akira Toriyama’s cleverest achievement. In Spanish Pan translates to “bread”. This follows in the footsteps of Gohan as Gohan translates to “rice” in Japanese so she has one foot in the grain family of food. Pan, however, is also a God in Ancient Greek mythology who is the god of the wild. This lends over to her mother’s side of gods and demons, as Videl is just rearranged letters for Devil and her grandpa Mr. Satan is, well, Satan.

22 The Son Family Legacy Is In Good Hands With Pan

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Legacy is an important thing in anime and western comic books. One just needs to look at Superman, Spider-Man, and Jean Grey to see how the offspring of super popular characters can be given a boost simply because of their parents. It isn’t often, though, that we see characters who are grandchildren of the main character. This makes the creation of Pan in Dragon Ball Z all the more incredible.

Born to Gohan and Videl, Pan is the granddaughter of Goku.

This makes her the only character in the entire franchise to be a third generation fighter. And she’s still pretty strong, considering how weak the Saiyan bloodline must be in her! Until Marron, Bulla, Trunks, or any other child of a Z Fighter start dropping babies, she’s going to stay the only one like her.

21 Gohan Is The Parent We All Hate

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Nothing is worse than when you’re in a store or out enjoying a fine evening with your partner and some other couple has a bratty child with no respect for their surroundings and ruins your evening. Well, now imagine that child has the strength to lift up an entire building. Now you have a real nightmare on your hands. That’s what we got going on here.

In Dragon Ball Super, Future Trunks meets up with Gohan. Trunks is a little shocked at how much Gohan has changed from the fierce warrior he knew from the Cell saga and his own timeline. He’s gotten so soft that he admits to Trunks that he has trouble disciplining Pan. This leads her to become a brat, but at least she’s darn cute.

20 Pan Hates Joy Itself

Many DBZ fans don’t like the direction that Gohan’s character went as he became an adult. They wanted a return to the person we saw glimpses of in the Cell saga; the warrior triumphantly marching towards Cell with a one-handed Kamehameha. They definitely didn’t want him to become a goofy, comedic superhero. Well, you can count his own child Pan into that argument.

In Dragon Ball GT, Pan says at numerous points that she feels dancing to be silly and doesn’t like watching it, let alone doing it.

Interestingly, we never see her interact with her parents in their superhero identities. Wouldn’t that be a great scene? It’s safe to say that won’t be happening, though, and if she did, she’d likely lose respect for her parents.

19 They All Have More Potential Than Their Parents

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Considering how powerful main characters Vegeta and Goku are, it’s insane to think there are characters created by Akira Toriyama and his disciples who are even stronger than those mighty Saiyans like Jiren and Beerus. It’s easy to forget, then, that there are a few characters who have been there for years that may not be stronger than Goku and Vegeta right now, but that certainly have the potential to be. I’m talking about their children, of course.

It’s been established by Akira Toriyama and numerous official DBZ sources that half-blooded Saiyans have greater potential than full-blooded Saiyans. From a young age, these kids are able to master things that take full-bloods years to achieve. The tradeoff is that most of the kids lack the desire for combat full-bloods do, so they likely will never reach those heights.

18 None Of Them Have Main Character Potential

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

A big problem that many fans have with Dragon Ball Super is the fact that Goku’s character in the show has regressed so much from Z. He is more of an idiotic man-child than ever and some fans have called for another character to take over the mantle of the main character in DBS. Gohan, perhaps?

But nope, none of the kids will ever take on the role.

It was tried at one point. At the end of the Cell Saga, Akira Toriyama was toying with the idea of making Gohan the main character of the story after Goku gave his life to save the world. Toriyama, for whatever reason, decided that Gohan wasn’t fit for the role and gave Goku back his throne. Somehow, I think the fans would welcome a change of main character now more than ever.

17 Future Trunks’ Advanced Weaponry

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

As cool as it would be, we likely are never going to get a Star Wars/Dragon Ball Z crossover. It would arguably change the face of western pop culture, having a meeting with the face of eastern pop culture, but it ain’t gonna happen. The closest thing you might get to it is, oddly enough, in a PS2 DBZ fighting game called Super Dragon Ball Z.

Unlike a lot of other DBZ fighting games (well at least until Dragon Ball FighterZ came out and reminded people that DBZ can totally work on a 2D plane), this title played much more akin to something like Street Fighter than the typical 3D brawlers the franchise is known for. In this game, Trunks can obtain a weapon called a laser sword which is… well look at it, it’s a darn lightsaber.

16 GT Trunks’ Character Is Confused

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

If you were to ask most DBZ fans which version of Trunks they liked best, most people would say Future Trunks. He is powerful but acts the most like a rational person in the show, he has an iconic sword, and is basically John Connor from the Terminator franchise. That would explain his personality in Dragon Ball GT. He is the straight man to the goofy duo of Goku and Pan.

Despite obviously looking like Future Trunks, the Trunks we see in GT is just our normal timeline son of Vegeta grown up. Now we know that Trunks in “our” timeline is a brash, cocky prankster, so it’s a little odd that his character in GT is much closer to his future counterpart. Now, granted, he IS the CEO of Capsule Corporation and has grown up, but to a lot of fans, it’s a little too far removed from what he should be.

15 Future Trunks’ Training Didn’t Go Well

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

In Dragon Ball Super, we see how far Future Trunks has progressed since failing against Perfect Cell in the Android saga. He has reached the height of Super Saiyan 2 and is able to fight off the almighty Goku Black, even though he really shouldn’t be able to. This is especially considering how bad his training was.

While growing up, his father wasn’t there for him.

Thus, he didn’t really start training until the Androids came along. He then trained with Gohan until his master bit the dust from trying to fight off two Androids who were each stronger than him alone. He then trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for one year with annoying Vegeta, and that was the last of the training we saw. Love that off-screen training!

14 The Royal Saiyan Children

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Royalty and hierarchies are things that exist in Dragon Ball but aren’t really brought up as much as they would be in other franchises. You know, except for Vegeta exclaiming a million times that he is the Prince of All Saiyans. But he is actually the King since his father has perished. This would make Trunks the true Saiyan Prince and Bulla the Princess.

Goku’s children shouldn’t feel left out. Technically they are also royalty, as Gohan and Goten’s grandfather and Pan’s great-grandfather The Ox King is, well, a king. That makes Gohan and Goten princes and Pan a princess. Not that the royalty of Fire Mountain is that important, so score this one for Vegeta’s family. HA! In your face Kakarot! Now fetch me a glass.

13 Future Trunks Is Older Than You Think

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

It’s extremely hard to gauge the age of anime characters. So often they look younger than what they really are because of art styles and this is especially true in DBZ what with Saiyan lifespans being longer than humans and all that. This case is especially evident in the case of Trunks.

For the most part, Trunks looks the same in Dragon Ball Super than what he did in the Cell Saga, aside from his clothes.

In reality, he is 31 years old! Born in Age 766 and it being Age 797, Trunks is now a full adult! We get that he shouldn’t have grey hair or anything like that, but it is worth noting that he is oldest Saiyan child in the franchise. He’s even older than Gohan!

12 America Can’t Handle The True Gohan

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

We see a lot of weird things in Dragon Ball Z. We see an android who gains energy from eating people through a giant vacuum-like tail, a pink blob monster as old as time who can absorb people through his very flesh, and a snake who is a princess that lures men off a giant road located above Hell. All that is okay, but apparently, the bottom of a kid is too much.

When Vegeta fights off the Great Ape form of Gohan in the Saiyan saga, the battle ends with the monkey boy crushing the Prince with his mighty ape form. In the original Japanese version of the show, Gohan is appropriately unclothed, because unlike the Incredible Hulk, Dragon Ball Z’s clothes obey logic. Not in some of the English dubs, though, as some of them cover up Gohan’s baby booty with a piece of blue fabric from Vegeta’s clothes.

11 Gohan Almost Had A Different Name

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

For fans that hate Gohan’s adult character of being a bookworm who lost all his strength, they should know that his fate was sealed the moment he was born.

It just would have been more obvious if Chi-Chi got her way in naming her child.

In the DBZ episode “Memories of Gohan,” the Son family and friends are celebrating Gohan’s 11th birthday when we see a flashback to Gohan when he was a toddler. This was still before he was given a name by his parents so Chi-Chi attempts to name the child Einstein. Unfortunately for her, Gohan cries at that name. His grandpa the Ox King tries to name him, but that doesn’t go well either. Only when Goku suggests the name Gohan after his adoptive father that Gohan is happy.

10 Trunks’ Greatest Fear Isn’t What You Think

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Even if we’re not an ancient warrior race who can shoot energy balls out of our hands, we are plenty powerful. That’s why it’s funny to some of us when we get afraid of bees, spiders, or other creatures that we are clearly much stronger than. It’s illogical, but we fall for it anyway. It seems this also carries over to Saiyan children who can destroy planets.

In the much-maligned Dragon Ball Z movie Bio-Broly, Kid Trunks drops an interesting line.

It isn’t picked up upon anywhere else in the franchise but is fun to think about anyway. Trunks tells Goten that “I have a problem with dogs.” At least Vegeta doesn’t have to worry about raising a puppy now. Now I have a desire to see a husky go Super Saiyan. Darn you, Bio Broly!

9 Gohan Never Met Somebody His Age Until High School

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Gohan has had anything but a normal childhood. Not only was he pushed relentlessly by his mother to become a great scholar, but when he wasn’t hitting the books he was hitting his uncle, alien despots, or artificial life forms square in their stupid faces. Because of this, Gohan never really had the chance to make friends with people outside of the Z-Fighters.

When he goes to high school, Gohan is obviously socially awkward due to his upbringing. Heck, his relationship to Videl was antagonistic at the start and only got better when Videl blackmailed Gohan into giving her what she wanted. Maybe Gohan would have done better if he actually met anybody his age before high school! Imagine having to experience that. No wonder why Gohan fell for the first girl who looked at him aside from Bulma and Chi-Chi.

8 Gohan Is Pure Of Heart

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

While there are plenty of good guys in Dragon Ball, there are comparatively few who could be described as pure of heart. Vegeta, Yamcha, and Master Roshi are all seen as “heroes” by us the audience but they couldn’t be described as pure of heart for various reasons. Gohan is one of the few characters in the series that has been irrefutably proven to be pure of heart.

I doubt Vegeta’s kids are pure anything.

This can be seen via two pieces of evidence. The first is in the Saiyan Saga when he bounces back the spirit bomb from his father Goku. That was when he was a young child though so that isn’t really impressive. However, he is seen riding the Nimbus Cloud when he is an adult. Going through all the stuff he did and still being pure of heart shows how awesome Gohan really is.

7 Goten Knows What He Likes

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Despite Dragon Ball Z Abridged giving Goku a fascination with bacon and muffins and making them his favorite foods, most Saiyans don’t actually have a favorite food. They usually just gorge on anything in sight, leading to giant muscles and even bigger grocery bills.

Goten is an exception to this rule, however. Perhaps it’s because he had a more “normal” upbringing than either his father or brother, but this Saiyan child knows what he likes and it’s something very simple and cheap. It’s called Pocky, a snack in Japan, but can be found in North America as well. They’re simply biscuit sticks coated in various flavors. Having tried some, I can attest that Goten has good taste, especially for a kid whose father will eat anything.

6 Goten And Trunks = Business Owners?

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

The friendship between Trunks and Goten is probably the most “normal” relationship that the entire Dragon Ball franchise has. The two are close in age, both are Saiyan/Earthling hybrids, and it is easy to see why the two are good friends as they both enjoy going off in search of mischief. They have to grow up eventually, though, and in the timeline of the short-lived video game Dragon Ball Online, we see exactly what happens to the two scamps.

Better future for Trunks: Capsule Corp CEO or swordsmanship teacher?

Because Gohan released a book explaining ki control to the public, Trunks, and Goten capitalized on the newfound popularity of ki by opening up a sword-fighting school. The two use their natural fighting talent to learn swordsmanship and their school booms in popularity.

5 Bulla Is The Key To Vegeta’s Heart

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

Vegeta starts out as one of the cruelest characters in the entire Dragon Ball franchise. Due to his time on Earth and his relationship with his new family, he slowly became domesticated and didn’t act like a psychopath. What progress for our horrible Saiyan!

The final nail in the coffin of Vegeta’s savage and inhuman nature has to be the birth of his daughter Bulla. In Dragon Ball Super, we can see that Vegeta has done everything he could to become a super dad, taking the time to learn about parenting tips and even choosing not to attend a fight because he didn’t want to miss her birth. In Dragon Ball GT, we see just how much power Bulla holds over her father as she becomes a bratty teenage girl but Vegeta never once retaliates.

4 Bulla Is More Unique Than You Think

Saiyan Spawn 23 Incredible Things We Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Kids

As the last child to be born in the Dragon Ball franchise (I’m not counting Vegeta’s and Goku’s descendants in the ending of Dragon Ball GT, so don’t @ me), Bulla’s birth needed to be something truly special. Leave it up to an Angel to do just that.

Bulla should put that on her resume when she grows up!

In Dragon Ball Super, Goku is looking to find fighters to participate in an exhibition match to amuse the creator of all living things Zen-Oh. Naturally, he asks Vegeta but he doesn’t want to miss the birth of his daughter as she is due any moment soon. Seeking to find a workaround, Whis uses his magic to teleport Bulla out of Bulma and into her arms. This action makes Bulla the only human or Saiyan to be born without going through the birth canal or via C-section.
