Masahiro Sakurai has dashed hopes of Mai Shiranui appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as either a playable character or background cameo, as the game is meant for good boys and girls and her design might be too provocative for the audience.

Sakurai recently held a forty-five-minute long presentation that discussed Terry Bogard’s playable appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It’s obvious from the presentation that Sakurai is a huge SNK fan and adores the series, as he exhibited an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the company’s fighting games.

Terry comes with his own stage that features background cameos from different Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters characters and Sakurai discussed them all at length. Once they were all shown, Sakurai mentioned that fans might have noticed an important character was missing from the line-up. According to the translator, Sakurai said that “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is for good boys and girls of many different ages, so we decided not to feature her, please forgive us.”

It’s surprising that Mai couldn’t make a background cameo in a stage, considering some of the other sexualized character designs in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game already features both Bayonetta and a scantily clad costume for Zero Suit Samus, so it’s not as if the game is lacking in provocative female characters. Bayonetta was toned down for her Super Smash Bros. series appearance, so the same could have been possible for Mai.

Mai was speculated to be one of the candidates for a DLC spot in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when the SNK leak happened before the last Direct. Terry always seemed the most obvious choice, but the lack of female characters among the DLC (except for Kazooie) made her a strong candidate. It seems that Mai’s assets and outfits might make her popular on the Internet, but they have kept from appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Terry Bogard is due to arrive in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on November 6, 2019.
