Not every Samurai Jack fan will be capable of donning the classic white gi and lifting that magic sword, as Battle Through Time is certainly a challenging feat to overcome, even when set on its easiest difficulty. In aid of those players who simply want to get the best out of this awesome Samurai Jack experience, here a few helpful tips in rendering the vile Aku obsolete once and for all.

Break Everything & Keep Vigilant

Throughout the game, players will notice many different environmental objects, which will vary depending on the level chosen. In the Undead Cemetery, for instance, tombstones and graves can be demolished to reveal gold, skill flares, Bushido spirits, Kiai fires, or even a corrupted Emperor’s Kamon. Other levels will feature pots, barrels, rocks, crystals, and more, each with their own forms of secret content. Some may even be hiding entire rooms and other hidden parts of the particular level, which is why breaking every single object in each and every area of Battle Through Time is recommended.

These secret paths in levels are discovered behind doorways with fractured surfaces, which can be broken into by using explosive arrows. Keep an avid eye while playing, as these rooms can easily be ignored when charging through the experience in the lifelong hopes of defeating Aku and getting back to the past. Hidden within these secret areas can often be found some noteworthy additions to Jack’s arsenal, like the Nodachi hammer and Great Samurai warrior’s sword, or other such prized items. Even some of Jack’s friends, like the Scotsman’s daughters, are secreted away within these vaults. Given that talking to everyone in this game is absolutely imperative, it’s best not to miss out on these puzzle rooms, as well.

Upgrading & Maintaining Weapons

There are a plethora of weapons to be found and bought within the world of Battle Through Time. Their ever-diminishing durability, movesets, and varying specs allow players a host of options to choose from when in the midst of a heated bout, especially those tougher boss battles. It’s best to ensure these weapons stay in tip-top form, as when broken they’re gone for good. Some can be found again via Da Samurai’s shop, but it’s probably better to keep gold for more useful expenditures, like weapon repairs, upgrades (which cost a ton), and ammo for Jack’s ranged arsenal.

Try to keep at least two to three bows in Jack’s inventory at all times, as repairing them and buying more via Da Samurai isn’t as easy as it may at first seem. If you are stuck at any point, though, and don’t have any health items, ranged ammo, or otherwise, as the Samurai Jack twitter account states in kind, you can always backtrack to Da Samurai or load up from the start of the chapter to get all the required gear needed in taking down that big baddie.

Fluid Combat: Dodging & Parrying

Although this may not be a Ghost of Tsushima by any means, Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time still does offer some amazing hack and slash combat blended most elegantly with some interesting ranged weapon mechanics. In fact, if it were to be correlated with any other game on the market, in my opinion, it would be Bloodborne out of all, due in large part to the structure of these various fights – especially when playing on Master of Masters difficulty. For this very reason, dodging and parrying are absolutely crucial when fighting, most importantly when in the thick of major boss battles.

Aku, for one, is as one may expect an extremely menacing foe no matter what difficulty you may be playing on. Learning how to dodge, parry, and even which weapons work best for you is a must before taking on the master of darkness himself. Also, don’t forget to check out each weapon’s combos and movesets in the menu by selecting the particular weapon and pressing either Triangle or Y. This will offer you far stronger attacks and a host of awesome boosts that will help you in the most difficult of dilemmas.

What I recommend, especially when surrounded by a ton of enemies, is jumping up into the air and using a strong attack (triangle or Y), which then sends Jack straight down on a foe with a menacing slash. Though very much “cheesy” and in the same vein of a Dark Souls hack of some kind, spamming this mode of engagement keeps Jack at a healthy range from severe damage, plus will tend to take out multiple enemies in one hit – or, at least, deals a ton of damage to one difficult mini-boss. It’s the perfect mode of action when faced with Master of Masters because playing on that difficulty is basically Samurai Jack: Bloodborne edition. It’s unhinged brutality, but not impossible.

As parting advice, I’d also like to remind players not to sleep on the prayer beads that can be bought at Da Samurai’s shop. They can be interchangeably equipped, so you aren’t stuck with just one on any particular level. You can wear whichever you prefer at any given moment and, though I may prefer the Guardian Bracelet, there are four in total that can be of extraordinary assistance throughout the game. Then, there’s also the Gift of the Gods, which is almost like Sekiro’s second chance death mechanic. Always have one of these on hand, I cannot stress this enough, as you never know who you may run across. Levels change depending on the difficulty, so it’s better to be prepared than not.

For now, though, it’s time to get back to the past.
