Sandal Probably Isn’t In Dragon Age 4

At least not with his usual voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal.

Sandal is an enigma. This unassuming dwarf joins your camp in Dragon Age: Origins, enchanting your weapons alongside his merchant dad. For most of the adventure he just hangs around the tents, ready to lend a hand. However, at the very end of the game you actually bump into him, miraculously having survived swarms of Darkspawn right near the final boss, ready to sell you any last-minute supplies.

What seemed like a throwaway gag was actually the first hint in one of Dragon Age’s biggest mysteries – why is Sandal so powerful? Not only does he pull off the same trick in the second game, he also has a small chance of spoiling the plot of Inquisition for you if you chat to him enough. A character of such rising importance throughout the games would be a fitting addition to Dragon Age 4 – however, it seems that will not be the case.

Speaking to USA Today, voice actor Yuri Lowenthal (yes, Sandal was voiced by Spider-Man) revealed that has not been asked to return for the fourth game. “I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn, but as far as I know there’s no Sandal in Dragon Age 4. If there is then it wasn’t played by me because I would have loved to have come back.”

The only silver lining for fans is that Lowenthal would love to play the quirky character again. “100%, I love that little guy. He could have just been a terrible joke, and he wasn’t. They gave him some turns that nobody saw coming. He’s a right badass.”

The last time we saw Sandal in person, he was working for Hawke on their estate. However, he’s clearly been a busy dwarf, as his journal can be found in the Trespasser DLC for Inquisition, all the way in an ancient elven library. True to form, the pages are found near some dead bodies.

This isn’t the only bit of bad news for Dragon Age fans this month. If a recent insider scoop is to be believed, then the long-awaited fourth game will be skipping the PS4 and Xbox One, jumping straight to next-gen. This means anyone who wants to finally have a bit of closure after Inquisition’s shock ending will have to (somehow) track down a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.
